It caused me to worry much more than I already was worrying.The training is difficult and the bonding of man to man is both necessaryfor survival and for loyalty. The men picked for training are already physicallysuperior and academically successful. The missions for which they are preparingare supremely important to our national security. Reading this account of Seal life will give the reader an appreciation for the dedication necessary to finish the difficult training.
If you want to read about and learn how someone becomes a Seal then this is the book for you. Not only is the author a Seal, Rorke Denver also was in charge of training Seals for four years. I know I learned something on almost every page and I am totally in awe of all those who go through the training to become a Seal. I also have respect for those who didn't make it as I read the book and had a better understanding of what it takes to be a Seal. The book is written in a way that is easy to follow even when discussing guns or military terms, The book then goes on to share the time the author was deployed, what the Seals could run into on their missions, the planning of missions and again just like while in training how the Seals all are a team. Everything done together. Fascinating book I enjoyed very much and highly recommend to others wanting to know about Seals.
I quite literally almost stumbled upon Rorke's book while looking up another SEAL. I purchased it in a heartbeat and read it over the course of two evenings...it was difficult to put down! With over a decade of war behind us, I believe there are far too few first-person experiential memoirs from those who served on the frontlines, as we as a society have come to depend on instant information from social media, online stories, and the like. But in 75 or 100 years? It is books like Rorke's that will still be here that will tell my grandkids what it was like to serve as a SEAL, on the frontlines and making future SEALs during the time of the GWOT.Damn Few is a book that should be on the shelves of anyone interested in today's special operations environment...and anyone who thinks they have an idea of what it's like to serve with the best of the best in the War on Terror. Although this is an autobiography, Rorke is not afraid to tell it as he sees it...something very rare today with so many people always wanting to edit their "personal brand" in order to prevent "soundbites" from biting them in the butt in the future (as undoubtedly, someone with Rorke's drive has many years of service to his nation and successful ventures left in him...) I highly comment Rorke for his willingness to be blunt and offer his opinions that aren't in line with what would give him the safest route to success, either in the military, or as a civilian. That takes a lot of guts and really, that's what this book is about.I will caveat my review by saying that the main reason I bought the book was because I was in the same Officer Candidate School class as Rorke (and one of his swim buddies). We had the classmates we called "real SEALs" (the guys who were prior enlisted SEALs) and then we had the "SEAL candidates" (which included Rorke). As a military historian even at the time, I stood in humble awe of the guys who had already gone to BUD/S (one of whom had been a BUD/S instructor before coming to OCS) and had an unlimited respect for Rorke and his fellow SEAL candidates. They worked their butts off...doing PT and making other preparations for BUD/S while the others of us in the class were sleeping or on liberty. I will say this: Rorke and his fellow candidates were never proud, never boastful, and to top it off, were probably some of the smartest and most well mannered officer candidates in the class. They were truly a cut above, and I still admire them for it - some sixteen years later.In conclusion, this book is a quick and enjoyable read, and one that I am proud to have in my library. Not only was it written by someone I served with, but someone I have the deepest respect and admiration for. In my book, Rorke is an American hero, and this book is his story.
This book was extremely fun and amazing to read. What I like about this book was how he also talks about ways on how to help people get through BUDS training, and his experience through training. Which I though was really neat. I also like how he talks about how he knew it was for him, and how his personality is what caused him to think job was for him. I also liked how he talked about his experiences that he went through, through his many deployments as a SEAL. So i would recommend this book to anyone who is interested in becoming a Navy SEAL, and also anyone who is looking a book that is great to read.

I found the articulate but plain speak insights and descriptions refreshing and very motivating in appreciating the contribution of strong core values, absolute commitment to success and the unswerving belief and trust in the skills and reliability of "the team."The writer's explanations and experiences are real, raw and gritty - a lot more useful than "release the tiger within" as the basis for understanding the real keys to success in life.Every aspiring champion or coach would profit from reading and absorbing these experiences, even if you only read the first 5 chapters.I believe the writer provides some great illustrations of what "totally tough" really is and easily dispels some of the misconceptions in modern day society.In addition, it is a fascinating story of life in a super elite branch of the military, without the embellishment of the Hollywood script writers.
Excellent, thrilling read for any guy with a military background. Exciting, almost unbelievable stories, presented in a very engaging writing style. My husband gave it as a gift to his veteran buddies, who loved it. Makes you appreciate the intensity of training these guys go through and their steadfast patriotism.
