Amazon.com Review

Maria Shriver's warmth, humor, and wisdom are evident on every page of this little book. Inspired by her commencement speech at the College of the Holy Cross, the book contains stories and insights that will be helpful, entertaining, and encouraging to graduates at every stage of life. The lessons themselves--"be willing to fail," "stand your ethical ground," "marriage is a hell of a lot of hard work"--are nothing new. What makes them interesting are the life stories that accompany them and Shriver's personable, friendly style. Reading this book feels like having a cup of coffee with a wise and funny friend. Tales of her first television experiences are surprising and hilarious, and she takes balancing motherhood and career to new levels--imagine postponing an interview with Fidel Castro to get your daughter to her first day of kindergarten! Each chapter is easy to read and ends with a focused lesson--kind of a bullet point from her original speech--that encourages readers to be ultimately true to themselves and their dreams, while cutting through harmful illusions. The last chapter, on laughter, is one to read again and again. Shriver maintains that without laughter not much else matters, and in life's toughest times it's laughter that gets us through. For anyone starting a new adventure--graduation, marriage, parenthood, career shift, or a milestone birthday--Ten Things I Wish I'd Known brings wisdom, laughter, practical suggestions, and a down-to-earth manner together into one fabulous gift. --Jill Lightner

From Publishers Weekly

Following the success of her 1999 bestseller What's Heaven?, in which she explained death to children, the NBC anchor woman expands on a commencement speech she delivered two years ago at Holy Cross College in Worcester, Mass., to share some of her life lessons with young people starting their careers. Although this slim gift book is positioned as a graduation gift, Shriver's natural audience is more likely to be busy working mothers like herself, and celebrity watchers who are curious about her thoughts on managing marriage, motherhood and career (Shriver and husband Arnold Schwarzenegger have four children). In lessons that are mostly about work and character, she shares simple notions that are fundamentally sound and that many adults will agree with: pursue your passion; consider no job to be beneath you; be willing to fail; realize that behavior has consequences; find a mentor. Unfortunately, the warmth and humor Shriver may have projected in person are forced on the page. Although she tries to build rapport with amusing stories of early faux pas and setbacks in her journalism career, readers may have trouble relating to her main predicamentAlack of appreciation from people who might have wondered if a beautiful, rich kid actually wanted a jobAas well as her idea of disappointment: not being as successful as Oprah or Diane Sawyer. Even so, Shriver's strength of character, her genuine admiration for her parents and her love for her family shine through. (Apr.) Copyright 2000 Reed Business Information, Inc.

Got the e version. Now I'm going to buy several print copies. Maria is a great writer, it's fun, it's interesting, it's autobiographical, it's short and sweet, and her advice is so true! Great gift -- not just for grads but for all!

I give this book to every High School or College Graduate.....and recently also gave it to my grandchild graduating from 8th grade because he is pretty mature. This book gives such good advice to young people going into another level of their lives. It is easy to read and such good common sense. The contents of the book started out to be a commencement speech and was later put into book form.

I am 56 and had I had this book to read in 1968 when I graduated high school I might have had the tools to do things a little better through my 20's and 30's. She gives you a rundown on what realistically to expect out of live, love, career and everything in between. I may have even been able to avoid my ex-husband!!!This is a must gift for any young person, maybe even younger than a high school graduate. It could actually put a kids expectations into the realm of reality without putting a damper on any of the joys of life. This is not a book that a conservative religious advocate would have to avoid. It contains simple comman sense about life and how it differs from what kids would often see on TV, movies, or any other media they would encounter. It doesn't tell you what belief system is best, just what life is most apt to hand you on any given day.It is easy reading and not very beefy, so even non-readers would benefit. They could use it as a reference book for a specific situation.Great Birthday or Graduation or Holiday gift and reasonable priced, too.

This book is a "Cliff Notes" for life - an excellent gift for graduates and worthy of review for those who have been "out in the real world" for awhile. It grew out of a commencement speech the author gave at Holy Cross College. Encouraged by audience members and her friend, Oprah Winfrey, she has expanded it into book form. Each chapter is arranged around a guiding precept detailed by anecdotes in her interesting and inspirational life. For instance: "Starting at the bottom builds character. It makes you hungry and determined. It is also a good way to find out, stunning as it may be, that you are not as smart as you think you are. " She then goes on to tell the reader about the bias against her when she started as an intern in her first "real life" newsroom. The news director thought she was a "dilettante ... 21 year old graduate from a fancy college - a RICH kid at that- coming in there thinking ` Ooooh fun! Can I play with the cameras too? Hey, I wanna go on the air!'" Maria showed him! "There was nothing I wouldn't do in that newsroom. I worked my *** off." (Wow! I didn't know the real Maria talked like that!) Now he's still in the small station newsroom and she's where she is.The book is composed, not of platitudes, but rather kernels of wisdom that need to be passed on through the generations - especially today where "common sense" and "common etiquette" are not common enough.I would give "10 Things" a 10 - but we are only allowed 5 stars.

I gave this book 3 stars, because some of the overriding principles might be of value to a recent graduate. I very well may have found some guidance from this book at that time in my life. However, as someone just a tad younger than Ms. Shriver, I learned little from her book. Moroever, her lessons are garnered from an unusually sheltered position. Risks can be taken, and certain choices can be made, when one does not need to work. Her "asides" about her wealthy family (and spouse) become a little irritating. Also, while she undoubtedly had to work hard to get where she is, she needs to stop trying to convince herself that her name and connections didn't open any doors. . .The writing, itself is not exemplary. It has a really "chatty" tone, which became a little irritating (especially the name dropping and the defensive "I'm not Oprah, you know. . .").

This is a well written, lovely book.

Got this a graduation gift, great little book, lots of good advice.

Great little book. Excellent advice
