I was trained in Pilates during physical therapy for my pelvis. When I found out that I had severe osteoporosis, due to an illness of malabsorption/malnutrition, I discovered that many of the Pilates exercises could put me at risk for fracture. This book shows exercises and daily movements that are safe for an osteoporotic spine, so I now live in hope of not fracturing.

Was looking for more challenging exercises than what was in the book. Book was very basic.

If you have not been active in your life and are looking for safe exercises, this would likely be a good book for you. However, if you have exercised (and still are) most of your life, this book is way too basic. I would not have purchased it had I known that. Still, it could be very useful for some people, just not for me.

This is a great beginning book if you are learning about Osteoperosis. The information was clear and concise and easy to apply.

Good for beginners or those who've just been diagnosed with osteoporosis or osteopenia

Gavin de Becker has produced a landmark work in the dual fields of criminal psychology and self defense. I was recommended "The Gift of Fear" by a colleague with experience in law enforcement: he claimed it was the best overall book on self preservation and personal safety he had ever read, and while it is excellent for both sexes, it is especially valuable for women. I purchased the book for a female friend on his recommendation, and I read it as well. The book is detailed, personal, practical, and poignant. The book extols the value of intuition (and resultant fear) as a predictor of potential violent or harmful behavior. Although my original intent in purchasing the book was a concern about violence from outsiders, the area of the book that I believe is most useful (especially to women) is violence from intimate partners. I found the sections on predicting violent behavior from people known to a victim to be the most harrowing yet most practical in the book. One thing that runs as a theme through the book (again, especially useful to women) is that controlling behavior in any relationship is an extremely serious warning. Although most controlling males don't become violent, the likelihood of violence from them is dramatically higher than in a healthy relationship; further, even if the scenarios don't escalate to violence, control issues can manifest themselves in a variety of other awful ways that are only touched on here.In this book de Becker makes the case that intuition is actually reasoned, but it is a function performed so fast in our brains that we are unaware exactly why we have such feelings. I think the book argues persuasively that we ignore such warnings at our own risk and that while we may be more comfortable with reason and logic, intuition is an invaluable ally, as is genuine fear (which is altogether different from worry or anxiety.)Although I bought this book for a very close friend for a very specific reason, I am going to purchase several more copies for other people I love and care about. Rarely do I recommend a self-help book unequivocally, but this is one of those times. Buy this book, read it yourself, and pass it along to people you love. This is a fantastic book, and I wholeheartedly endorse it.

I spent 20 years on the streets in local law enforcement. I always felt that the Temporary Restraining Orders (TRO) we served on stalkers and spousal abusers were as worthless, in most cases, as the paper they were written on. Usually they simply served as a salve to sooth our justice system's guilt over unwillingness or inability to take strong and immediate action, or develop alternative solutions. As Gavin de Becker so aptly points out, when it comes to committed stalkers and abusers, not only are they not afraid of a piece of paper, it incents them to even a higher degree of activity and perhaps violence. The author makes an excellent case that we should be much more judicious in evaluating such cases against a threat matrix and respond in different ways depending on the nature of the threat.I also greatly appreciate the author's discussion of the origins of fear and how important it has been in allowing mankind to develop. In addition to the twenty years I spent in law enforcement, I am also a Certified Body Language trainer and teach the power of nonverbal communication. As research has shown, what we call women's intuition is in reality the fact that women, on average, are far better at picking up nonverbal cues than men. That "intuition" was absolutely essential for the females of our species to survive in a very hostile world, where they were of slighter stature and needed to quickly detect threats around them. As the primary caregiver to children they also needed to be able to effectively interpret the cues and needs of infants and small children before spoken language. One interesting study involved showing short film clips with the sound turned off to groups of men and women. Women scored an incredible 87% accuracy in evaluating the situation shown in the video. Afraid guys we only scored 42%. fMRI scans reveal women use 14-16 regions of their brains during communication, while men only 4-6 areas (most women probably would dispute giving us that much credit-:)In modern society, in the interest of being "polite", we often suppress our natural intuition, our gut feelings. Back in my police career we didn't even have a term called Body Language. We only knew it as "street-smarts". One of my great fears has to do with my beautiful wife's suppression of her natural intuition around strangers, in the interest of being polite and non-judgemental. The nature of my our respective careers requires us to live in a dense urban area, surrounded by all sorts of threats. Dark parking lots, underground garages, elevators and streets filled with street people and drug addicts. While our building is very secure, once you are on the streets it's a whole different ball game. She has terrific intuition when she uses it. She is like a perfectly honed tuning fork when she is willing to trust her intuition, but due to her kind and trusting nature, she often suppresses it in the interest of being all-inclusive and accepting.Gavin de Becker's loud message to women, Trust your gut, Don't suppress your intuition, Don't worry about hurting some stranger's feelings is a powerful one. It is my hope that my wife and every woman will be willing to read the book, reflect on all the powerful stories in The Gift of Fear, including the author's personal story.

This book is an invaluable resource for women. The 4th chapter by itself is worth the price of the book alone. Titled "Survival Signals" this chapter will teach you the sophisticated manipulations that criminal predators use to try and gain control over you.You will learn about: "forced teaming"- establishing premature trust based on sharing a predicament. "charm and niceness" (remember, niceness does not equal goodness.) "too many details"- When people lie what they say doesn't sound credible to them so they keep talking. "typecasting"- Involves a slight insult to get the woman to respond by engaging verbally with the crim-pred. "loan sharking"- (it's hard to tell a creep to eff off when he's done something helpful and now you are indebted to him.) "discounting of the word NO"- refusal to respect the word no is a signal a crim-pred is trying to control you or refusing to relinquish control. There is much more detail in this chapter, and I cannot emphasize enough how important it is to recognize these "interviewing techniques" that criminal predators use. Thank you Gavin de Becker for writing such an important and informational book.

This is the kind of book I should ordinarily despise. It contains a broad arc of history viewed internally and is epic in the worst way possible. And yet, it is incredibly compelling for two reasons: (i) there is something to be said for viewing history from the perspective of generational change and (ii) the prediction made in the book (written in 1998) that we will enter a time of crisis around 2005 give or take a few years was spot on. In addition, minor points should be given for turning the spotlight on the financial world as the catalyst for the crisis of 2008.In a nutshell, the book advances the view that history roughly repeats itself every 80 years. Further, every 80 year period is characterized by the arrival of Artists (silent generation in this cycle), Prophets (boomers), Nomads (Gen Xers) and Heroes (millennials). Previous incarnations of this cycle ended with the war of independence, the civil war and world war II. This naturally sets up the denouement for this cycle which the authors expect to occur in the 2025 time frame. Each cycle is divided into turnings: the present one is characterized by First (High: 1946-1964), Second (Awakening: 1964-1984), Third (Unraveling: 1984-2008) and Fourth (Crisis: 2008-202X). From the book's perspective and Neil Howe's subsequent blog posts, we entered the Fourth Turning in 2008. There's nothing spooky or mystical about these cycles and turnings: instead the authors stress that human nature and culture seem to have these rhythms and that Anglo-American history is stable enough to be characterized in this manner. Other cultures may either be too stable or too chaotic to follow this type of pattern.Prior to the arrival of Donald Trump and despite the eerie portend of the financial crisis, I would have dismissed this book. Now, it looks positively prophetic. Is there any doubt now that the combination of (i) income inequality, (ii) the economic problems of the white working class, (iii) the culture wars, (iv) multiculturalism and globalism, (v) the ravages of identity politics and postmodernism and (vi) terrorism is not going to be a combustible mix over the next decade? And that these will simultaneously distract us from combating global warming - the clear threat of the next era? While I find it hard to buy into the notion that the US will face an existential crisis (as predicted by the book), there's definitely merit in the view that the next ten years will probably have the capability of shocking us however jaded we may be at the present time.

Overall, this book was very good, thorough and well-written. The only complaint I have is that it gets pretty repetitive at various points. I understand that this is to drive home the point and to relate the past to the present, but at some points, it seemed like just filler. The content of this book is astounding. I just picked it up this year (2018) and the book was written over two decades ago. The breakdown in American politics and society that the authors mention for the unraveling era are alive and present. The older boomer generation pushing for "action" and wanting the young to dedicate themselves toward a path of war is ever present (even after two seemingly never ending wars in the last 13 years). There were some predictions that were wrong, such as the spirit of the millennial group, but all in all, it's a frighteningly accurate prediction. The authors give good ideas on how we can prepare for the 4th Turning bother socio-politically and on an individual level. I'm not holding my breath on society preparing itself and I have even less hope for politicians to do so. Preparation is for the individual as far as I'm concerned. This is the kind of book that you want to share with everyone you care about and even with the public in general, but unfortunately it's not something most people will care about until it's too late.If you're thinking of getting this book, get it asap, try to complete it within a month's time, share it with those you care about and then make a plan of action to ready yourself for the 4th Turning.

I am almost ashamed to review this book. It is like reviewing "Fifty Shades of Grey"—the mere fact the someone publicly admits he has read it degrades both him and his listeners. My only defense is that Steve Bannon has repeatedly stated this book is a major influence on his thought. He’s a clever man. So I sought wisdom by following his lead, but instead, I got a rotten egg. While I still have a great deal of respect for Bannon, having read this book, the Respect-O-Meter has dropped by roughly 60%. He may gain the respect back, for example by correctly predicting the results of, and the impact of, this coming May’s elections to the European Parliament. But it will be a task, after subjecting me to "The Fourth Turning."This will not be a long review; that merely prolongs the agony. I write only to sketch out the major areas of failure, to make clear your need to avoid losing time you will never see again. At its core this book requires a total detachment of the reader from reality. The American singer Cat Stevens (bear with me) is known nowadays for having adopted Salafi Islam and being a rabid Jew-hater. But before he converted, he was big into numerology, as I remember from watching, some years ago, a VH1 “Behind the Music” special on his life. In that phase of his life, at least, Stevens would have been very comfortable with "The Fourth Turning," because the entire book is prophecy based on numerology. All that’s missing is a good dose of astrology. In a nutshell, what William Strauss and Neil Howe claim is that all human affairs are, always have been, and always will be, governed by a time period, the saeculum, which approximates the length of a “long human life,” or roughly eighty years. Each saeculum has four generations, each of which has universal and certain characteristics, which succeed each other like the tick-tock of a clock. I am not going to tell you anything about them, their names or anything else, though, because they are stupid. Each saeculum also has a succession of events, from Awakening to Crisis, in a repeating pattern. After the climax of a Crisis, the society reboots itself and is reborn; this is the “Fourth Turning.” Strauss and Howe predicted, in 1997, such a Crisis beginning around 2005, with the rebirth to be complete by around 2025.Before we get to the predictions, let’s cover the core structure. The reader quickly realizes that all this is a charlatan’s game, when he reads how narrowly the authors constrain their historical examination. Despite muttering about the Romans and the ancient Hindus, they identify only six saecula, beginning at the end of the Wars of the Roses, through 1997. This is the “Anglo-American Saeculum.” No attempt whatsoever is made to extend their analysis beyond England, until the Glorious Revolution, after which no mention at all is made of England, and the focus shifts solely to America. No Europe. No Asia. No Africa. Nothing at all. You’d think at least some attempt would be made to extend this supposedly universal framework beyond a very stripped-down history of America, but you would be wrong.Even worse, the stated reason for beginning the examination of cycles around 1500 A.D. is not, as one might expect, lack of data. As becomes clear later, only the most trivial and superficial data is necessary for the authors to claim support for their theory. No, it’s because until the Reformation, don’t you know, Europeans could not comprehend linear time, except for maybe a few priests. Everyone lived in the eternal, cyclical now. The ignorance of this is astounding, and moreover it’s not clear why supposedly immutable and invariable generational cycles would be obviated by the common people’s perception of time, but nonetheless, it is the authors’ excuse for narrowing their time window to a convenient one—namely, one where throwing out a few names from the relevant time period makes it seem like the authors know what they are talking about, because of the vague familiarity most people have with at least some of the names.Much ink is spilled in pseudo-academic and pseudo-scientific jargon. Many tables and charts are offered, complete with arrows to guide the confused reader through pop history along the desired garden path. The writing is terrible—rambling, repetitive, and reeking of selective fact choice. Even ignoring the tightly constrained focus, the exposition of the supposed saecula is risible. It consists of shouting out references to well-known figures, such as Abraham Lincoln, or cultural happenings, such as the Great Depression or rock-and-roll; giving a short and utterly flat (and often false) description of the figure or happening; and then making an enormous leap to conclude that figure or happening proves something, by itself, about a twenty- or forty-year period in history, which just so happens to coincide exactly with the authors’ thesis. It is a total waste of time; you would be better informed about world history by reading "Goodnight Moon."Every substantive prediction in this book has been falsified. No, there has not been another religious “Great Awakening” in America. The 1990s are not remembered as a time of misery. Old people today are not inspired to refuse government handouts and young people have not stood up to deny them handouts. The Baby Boomers in their retirement have not created new forms of civic life. Nor have they created an “elder ethos that will hinge on self-denial.” I laughed out loud when I read that, before I read that “On the job, Millennials will be seekers of order and harmony. They will delight employers with their skills, work habits, and institutional loyalties.” I nearly ruptured myself laughing after that one. Even a blind squirrel is supposed to find a few nuts, but surveying the predictions in this book, that adage has been disproven. The Crisis, ending a saeculum, that the authors predict isn’t some minor tumult, but, by the examples they give, something along the lines of complete political breakdown, major war, or a widespread pandemic leading to social near-collapse. Society will stabilize; then, after a few years, society will change dramatically, creating a new Awakening, and beginning the cycle again. Some people, doubtless Bannon among them, seem to think that because Strauss and Howe predicted a Crisis beginning around 2005, that they are therefore great prognosticators. No doubt Bannon would like a Crisis to help move his program forward; I have a lot of sympathy for that view. But it takes no skill to claim that any advanced society will, at least every few decades, pass through something that can justly be cast as a crisis, yet is still modest, and the 2007 financial crisis fits into that mold. It was not an existential Crisis in the sense the authors predicted. Nor does it take much skill to predict that America, which has been in decay for decades, will someday face an existential Crisis. It hasn’t arrived yet, though, and time is up on Strauss’s and Howe’s predictions.Oh, it’ll come, because history will return. But this book does not tell us anything about it. Certainly, if there is a such an extreme Crisis, the path of initial stabilization followed by a reworking of society is more or less the typical one. Where the authors go wrong is in thinking there is any more pattern to history than that. That in retrospect some groups of people born roughly at the same time may evince, when viewed from certain angles, a set of common characteristics, does not create some kind of magic predictability machine. There is no wisdom here.

I have been a migraine sufferer for many years and since I hit my 40's they have gotten so much worse been so disruptive to my every day life. I've pretty much tried every medication and therapy there is to try and I was and still am so frustrated at the inability to treat my migraines. However reading Dr. Bernstein's book was such an eye opener for me. I felt she had a true compassion and understanding for migraine patients and I was impressed at how she explained the migraine brain and what triggers migraines for so many people. She draws on her knowledge of so many years and gives examples of patients she has treated which really humanizes what so many migraine sufferers experience. It can be such an isolating condition to have, as many people who do not suffer from migraines cannot possibly understand how debilitating and disruptive they can be to your life. I am currently being treated at the Stanford Headache Clinic and even though they are probably one most well known institutions out there I don't feel that I got the same in depth explanations as to my condition EVER. I have kept a migraine diary for years and nobody at the clinic or even any of the many neurologists or doctors I have seen over the years have ever really took the time to review it. I had to figure out myself that my migraines were hormonally triggered and be my own advocate to try to find a solution to my problem. Popping different pills is not really the answer. Now after reading this book, I found I have a whole new set of knowledge that I can use to try to get past chornic migraines. So to all the migraine sufferers out there - I highly recommend this book!

I've had migraines for 15 years. I didn't learn anything new from this book, but I found it to be a realistic, practical guide for managing migraines. I appreciated the alternative treatments that were discussed, since I am currently pregnant and can't/won't take medications, and nothing I've tried ever really worked for me anyway. I've found that a dark room and an ice pack does wonders. I would have to disagree with the author about food triggers though... she asserts that a food is only a trigger if you get a migraine within 2 hours of eating it. I am definitely affected much longer than 2 hours after ingesting my triggers, can be up to 12 hours for me.

I've suffered from migraines for 25 years now. There's things in this book that I have never had my doctors or neurologists tell me. It explains so much! I've always felt that my migraines were linked to certain parts of my body, but doctors haven't listened to me. I found some helpful advice that I've been able to put to good use to reduce attacks and relieve pressure/pain. I've recommended it to my sisters who all also suffer from migraines.

I have been suffering from Migraines since the age of 10 and I have to say that this book is one of the best on the subject. Having lived with migraines for some time I have amassed a library of reference material to help me understand the condition. The book does a really good job at explaining what is going on in your brain and the treatments available. The chapters are well organized and one does not have to read the book in order to seek the information you need. Overall very satisfied with the purchase and this is one of the books I will maintain as an excellent resource.

I've had migraines most of my life, but until a few years ago, only occasionally, and with easily identifiable triggers. That changed, and migraines took over my life. After one particularly debiliating migraine, I knew I had to do something. I thought I understood migraines, but I realized how little I knew when I read this well-written and well-organized book. Got it first from the library, then ordered a copy for myself to study. I will be using it as a template as I work with my physician to develop a plan to manage my migraines, and hopefully return my life to something closer to normal. Dr. Bernstein wrote about migraine in ways that I immediately identified with, taught me many things about it I did not know, showed me how to keep a headache diary, and what signs to look for that could help me "catch" my migraines earlier, and thus minimize their impact on my life. The book explains about different types of medicine and other options for treatment, so that as my doctor and I develop my plan, I can be an informed participant. Already I have noticed some improvements, and have adapted the sample charts in the book for my own circumstances. Certainly, I am much more aware of what my body and brain are trying to tell me. It gives me optimism that my life can open up again. And it impressed my doctor that I had already begun keeping the kind of records he needs to help me sort things out!

Will finish reading it because I paid for it but not really a great book. It was just a continuous promotion of herself and the book. There were some good examples but I would definitely get something more current. The pharmacotherapy options in this book is already outdated.

Very informative book. Some of the information I was aware of, but there was much that I did not know. This is a very helpful book when getting ready for Dr. appointments. I sent copies to family members that also suffer from migraines. I'm very glad someone who suffers from migraines and also has the ability to write such a helpful book has taken the time to do so.

This is an absolutely fascinating book about a condition that has been a problem for most of my life. I have long felt that migraines almost had to be genetic, and here is proof. I have confirmed four generations, from my maternal grandmother to my mother, to myself and one of my daughters, who have all experienced these debilitating headaches. Very honestly, I would never wish this kind of pain on my worst enemy. It's just not a fun way to spend time.

This was the textbook required for my son's college class. His dad is a teacher at the tech college and they both tell me this a great textbook, just as described and very helpful. Me? I don't have a clue. Them? They know what they're talking about.

When I received them. I was excited to learn how to code. The problem was that every time I turn a page, it just felt like the book is about to break. After reading all the reviews about how their binding broke. I took action, I went to Staples and asked to get them spiral bind. They cost $6 each to add the spiral binding and I was impress with their results.

It is very good because it is easy to read and well organized. Some people would complain about a lot of images and empty spaces, but easy on the eyes for me and give you info in bites. The best way to use these books it to combine them with practical training (widely available online or on YouTube. Like SoloLearn and CodeAcademy). Read the relevant chapter in this book first, then practice it. Coding needs reading and practicing using various sources, because no single source gives you the whole story. It is a matter of accumulating bits and pieces of knowledge.

This set is fantastic! I’ve been teaching myself html, css and JavaScript and JQuery for the last month or so. I’ve been using these books along with a couple of other sources, and I’ve learned so much! (Still have a long way to go though, of course.) Overall, I’ve found these books to cover the basics and then I move on to other sources to learn in a more in-depth fashion. These books are set up in a way that shows you the basics, but then serve as a great reference to go back to after you’ve learned enough to write code more proficiently on your own. They are also beautifully laid out and present the information in a simple fashion, making the concepts bite-sized and easy to learn. I have not had any issues with the binding, but I also have been more careful about not stretching the binding past 180 degrees when opening the books, because of the cautionary reviews I’ve read on here.

These two books are beautiful with their illustrations and such, but the pace at which they move is incredibly slow. As someone who has programming in other computer languages (C#, C++, C, Java) and other markup languages (XAML), I found it a bit irritating at time how the pacing of the book was. On that note, I wish some of the stock photography illustrations in the book were replaced with additional examples as the examples that were in the books were helpful. Nevertheless, the books are generally helpful, especially when laying out the format of functions and indicating what goes where. However, if you have programming experience elsewhere, consider another book.

This is likely a premature review, but I have just finished the HTML and CSS book. This review will be revised as necessary once I finish this set, but I have to say: what an amazing read. I have previous experience programming in R and Python, and found the exposition to be very coherent and very clear. About 10 hours through reading this book, I could actually read and understand most HTML code on a webpage. I have experience here and there having to write simple HTML pages on the fly, but it's nice to finally -understand- what the code is doing and have a good idea on how to structure a web page. Highly recommended for people who need to learn HTML quickly and don't have time to Google absolutely everything! The CSS section is just as great, but it will take longer than 10 hours to go through. Very nice and easily reproducible examples (except in the cases where he uses a downloaded image, but I don't mind that much). This book could use some updating, however, with respect to HTML5 and CSS3.

has been deprecated, for example. I look forward to seeing an update released.

Decent learning tool so far. More of a refresher really. I'm going through the HTML book just to brush up but it's the JavaScript and jQuery that I need to learn. I took some other reviewers advice and immediately had it spiral bound at Office Depot. Which turned out great! The reason I give it 3 stars is because it really needs to be revised and updated for HTML5. Many of the examples include older code (which the author distinguishes as such) and also include CSS style in the HTML code. Which in my opinion is a big waste of time. The author should explain structure and keep CSS styling completely separate as that's pretty much how it's done everywhere now. The book is copyrighted 2011. Which is pretty ancient in the programming world. I'm sure I will more than get my money's worth out of this book set, I'm just a little disappointed in how outdated it is.

I was taking an online course and some of the concepts were confusing. This book saved me. The author has a real gift for explaining things clearly and succinctly, with appropriate examples. It's not a book for "dummies", so don't expect a lot of chatty banter (like in the Heads First books), but you really don't need to read through 700 pages of wordy prose to learn to code. Most concepts are easily explained in a paragraph or two, a large colorful illustration, and a few clear examples, that you can play with on your own (all code examples are downloadable). Also serves well as a reference source. The large colorful pages make the book a delight to read and easy to digest (never buy a programming book that is just black and white; color adds a lot). The format may at first seem "sparse", as many pages just have illustrations of code with a paragraph or two to explain things, but it turns out this is a quick and effective way to learn. You can stop looking at other books on the subject. This is the one to get.
