Review

“Dr. Ross hits his narrative stride... in chapter after chapter. The stories of the wounded storytellers unfold smoothly on the page, as mesmerizing as any they themselves might have told, those squinting, wheezing, arthritic, infected, demented, defective yet superlative examples of the human condition.” ―The New York Times“A rollicking good story.” ―The Washington Post“[This] engrossing account of the illnesses endured by Shakespeare, Milton, Swift, the Brontës, Hawthorne, Melville, Yeats, Jack London, Joyce and Orwell...which deftly mixes close reading and diagnostic acumen, will stay with me for a long time. I have scarcely touched on the richness of this witty and deeply humane book. It would be worth reading for the extraordinary tale of the pathologically shy Hawthorne...Dr. Ross avoids the common mistake of overconfidence in his retrospective diagnoses, aware that nothing fits so neatly as a wrong diagnosis. And he avoids the reductive temptation of explaining the genius of his writers by pathologies that are, after all, suffered also by the untalented. Though some of his stories are familiar, they have never, in my experience, been told so well. Given that many of Dr. Ross's subjects were suffering from infectious diseases, it helps that this is his area of expertise. But he is also a penetrating literary critic and a perceptive and humane observer of the lives of writers and of those in their orbit. His light touch with cultural, social and political history is something from which many of the professionals in literary studies could learn. This is a book to which I shall return again and again.” ―The Wall Street Journal“Carefully looking at distinguished authors from a medical perspective, Ross blends biography, history, literature, science, and imagination in just the right doses.” ―Booklist (starred review)“Lively, probing.” ―The Washington Times“Especially recommended for readers who enjoy historical context with their great books.” ―Kirkus Reviews“This lively, occasionally squirm-inducing book sketches the case histories of 10 writers whose health influenced their literary work...Into a satisfying series of medical mysteries [Ross] injects notes of wry humor and obvious affection.” ―The Boston Globe“...a fascinating, surprising, and at times hilarious compliation.” ―New Scientist“Most writers aren't doctors. And most doctors aren't writers. When the two talents coincide, readers are treated to rare wisdom and novel insights. John Ross skillfully walks us through a clinic of the famous unwell.” ―Nassir Ghaemi, author of A First-Rate Madness and Professor of Psychiatry, Tufts University School of Medicine“We always long to know writers better: more than just their words, we want to immerse ourselves in their lives, to really feel what they felt. This book does that, plunging you in the day-to-day pains and struggles of some of the most celebrated names in the canon.” ―Sam Kean, author of The Disappearing Spoon and The Violinists' Thumb“If this irresistibly entertaining collection of medical biographies is anything to go by, its author would make a crackerjack after-dinner speaker. Each section consists of a whirlwind tour through the life of a famous literary figure from a doctor's perspective, some of it imagined, and all of it punctuated by witty and fun-loving asides...what sets Ross apart is his pure storytelling ability.Using a fluid and unpretentious style, much like fellow physician and writer Atul Gawande's, he excels at condensing massive amounts of research into pleasurable reading.” ―Winnipeg Free Press“The book is rather like a gripping medical detective book as Ross works out what was wrong with a collection of literary greats.” ―The Daily Telegraph“Ross has nicely merged biographical data for each author with insightful discussions of his proposed medical diagnoses, and how their symptoms and treatments might have affected their work. While those in the medical community will find this book of interest, it is wonderfully engaging, often witty and quite intriguing to those of us outside of it, too.” ―Shelf Awareness

According to the author, the spark for writing this book occurred when Dr. Ross was researching the literature for quotations on syphilis, the subject of a forthcoming academic presentation. He was impressed by the number of references to venereal disease in Shakespeare’s body of work. Further research uncovered that the Bard, later in life, suffered from unsteady gait and shaky handwriting possible as a complication of mercury vapor treatments for syphilis. Dr. Ross put his findings in a published article “Shakespeare’s Chancre:did the Bard have syphilis?” 02/ 2005. This was followed a few months later by “Tuberculosis, bronchiectasis and infertility: what ailed George Orwell” 12/2005; and three years later by “The many ailments of Herman Melville (1819-91)” published on 02/2008.These articles became the core of this book that was expanded by adding seven more literary luminaries and exploring their physical afflictions. Each of the ten chapters deals with a specific author, his biography, medical history, possible etiology of the diseases, differential diagnosis, treatments and consequences.Chapters begin with a fictitious event, setting the stage for the maladies of the subject and the contemporary state of the art of medicine. The lives and maladies of Shakespeare (syphilis), Milton (blindness/gout), Swift (dementia), the Bronte sisters (TB), Hawthorne (anxiety/cancer), Melville (ankylosing spondylitis/bipolar), Yeats (Hypertension/Brucellosis), London (Yaws), Joyce (VD) and Orwell (TB) are presented and detailed in a similar fashion = No spoilers here= Dr. Ross postulates many theories as to the afflictions of his subjects and explains his assumptions in plain language for the non-medical reader. In my opinion the book goes off the rails when the author ascribes mental illness and psychiatric syndromes to most of his subjects; “Asperger’s syndrome was the cause of Emily Bronte’s lack of social skills and overall odd behavior”. Dr. Ross attributes the same ailment to other writers (Milton, Swift, Yeats) as well. He implies that the writers’ maladies were intrinsic to the eminent distinction of their work. The author, in his attempt to appeal to a general readership, has diluted the medical context and eschewed medical jargon, all the while inserting biographical vignettes and fictional situations to link historical events. This, in turn, would not satiate the medical historian or the curious clinician. The prose is smooth, clear and sometimes witty. The writing becomes awkward when the author tries to construct some fictitious scenes. Dr. Ross treats his subjects with compassion for the physical pain and psychological torture they endured, often made worse by some of the barbaric treatments inflicted by their physicians.Overall, I found the book to be entertaining by its font of historical trivia, but uneven in its coverage of literary figures and overreaching in some of its diagnoses. By the end of the book, I was left with the impression that mental illness was a prerequisite for great literary works.I would recommend this book to the lay reader, interested in literary and medical history, as a primer for further exploration.

The stereotype that writers are considered to be a bit odd or reclusive is perhaps because they are odd and reclusive. John J. Ross, a physician at Boston’s Brigham and Women’s Hospital and guest editor for the prestigious quarterly Infectious Diseases Clinics of North America, has written a highly readable and entertaining book that delves into the lives and illnesses of some of our most famous and beloved authors. His book is an easy to read combination biography, review of classic literature, and medical journal.I’ve spent my life deliberately avoiding reading Wuthering Heights and Jane Eyre but after reading the real life tragedies of the Bronte family, and learning these two classics are somewhat based on the realities of the sisters’ lives has piqued my interest. While tuberculosis stalked the reclusive family, Ross identifies enough traits to suggest the Emily Bronte had Asperger syndrome.Jonathan Swift’s proclivities suggest Obsessive Compulsive Disorder based on his “abhorrence of filth”—filth apparently being the norm for the period—and his celibate life style. Even with his abstinence he managed to ruin the lives of two women.Roth also sees bipolar disorder as a psychological malady of writers. In the case of Herman Melville, it seems to have been inherited from his father, Allan Melville. We are treated to a fair bit of senior Melville’s erratic life before delving into Herman’s. Of him, Roth writes, “Melville had two powerful risk factors for bipolar affective disorder; the loss of a parent in childhood, and a robust family history of mood disorders.”We learn that Melville’s friend—perhaps intimate friend—Nathaniel Hawthorne also comes from a disrupted childhood, and exhibits a “pathological shyness consistent with social anxiety disorder, or social phobia.” Hawthorne’s behavior is such that he would “run into a field to avoid meeting strangers on a road” and avoid eye contact when dining or walking in public. According to his wife, “He hates to be touched.”Apart from the psychological disorders of famous authors, there are the physical maladies, ranging from sexually transmitted diseases, perforated ulcers, blindness and deafness, to Jack London’s renal failure, undoubtedly brought on by a self-administered morphine overdose.I found the history of medicine in this book to be both frightening and fascinating. Whether you favor Obamacare or not, we should be so grateful we live in the times that we do. There was no concept of germs, therefore surgeons saw no need to wash their hands while attending to multiple patients. If your disease didn’t kill you, the treatment often would. Medicines often included heavy doses of lead, arsenic, and mercury. It seems mercury was a very effective laxative in its day; the heavy liquid metal could push anything through the intestinal track.John J. Ross’ Shakespeare’s Tremor and Orwell’s Cough is a fast, enjoyable read that is hard to put down.

Every time I take a pill for my maladies, I am grateful that I live todayrather in some primitive age, like fifty years ago! John J. Ross's bookabout the ailments that beset some famed authors make meeven more grateful to be alive now. Of course I realize that futuregenerations may very well look at our time with horror at the stupidityof our current so-called treatments and cures. Ross's book is very readable, because of, or despite, its display of thorough academic knowledge of whatmay, or may not, have sickened or killed Shakespeare, Hawthorne, Melville, the Bronte sisters, Yeats, James Joyce, and Orwell, and a few others. The critique of the medical overuse of mercury and arsenic, bleeding, anduseless potions will keep you reading and also fact-checking your own doctor'sprescriptions. Some of the medical jargon may be arcane and hard toswallow, but the reader always feels the author/doctor knows what he is talkingabout. He ticks off symptoms and failed treatments of these celebrity writers socompletely, it's possible to forget which actual disease did in the poor fellow atthe last. It isn't pretty, but it does make a person appreciate how these writerssuffered and yet somehow managed to complete their works.Cheers for themand cheers for this doctor who diagnoses the mood disorders, STDs, and excessesof the famed, but not totally blessed, writers of the Western Canon. --- Daniel Curzon

Mary Hall Surface is possibly the best young audiences playwright around. I directed her adaptation of 'The Hundred Dresses' a few years ago, and was inspired to look at more of her work as a result. These scenes and monologues are PERFECT for grades 5-9 or so, and they are wonderfully diverse. It is difficult to find such quality material for urban students, but this book offers it in spades! Buy the book!

I bought these to use with my first-year drama students! They are a great resource for quick-to-memorize scenes! Highly recommended for students who are just exploring their dramatic side!

This book provided a nice selection of pieces for my middle school speech team members to pick from. We have used several of the selection for recent competitions.

Thanks

Love this book. It is perfect for anyone involved in Middle School Theatre. This book was promply delivered and was in good condition.

This large volume is rife with distinct voices, multicultural characters, and engaging scenes. The monologues are not just a string of questions, but the unseen character the soloist is speaking to is clearly defined within the monologue making them useful for character study and acting in general. The characters throughout the volume are age appropriate and the plots presented would be of interest to middle school and younger high school students. The volume is organized well with short monologues divided by gender in the first half of the book and scenes with incrementally increasing number of characters in the second half of the book. The book is useful for classroom use (beginning through advanced classes), character work, ensemble work, and practice for students blocking and directing scenes.Monologues range from the historical (immigrants coming to America, pg 74) to current issues (global warming, pg 78) but are always seen from the young person's point of view. The multicultural voices included in the collection are realistically written with appropriate diction and rhythm to their speech. Occasionally, indigenous words (xie xie, pg 10) are scattered throughout monologues, but the correct pronunciation as well as the word's meaning are always included so as not to confuse the student. The topics are relevant and even come from literature the students may be studying (To Kill a Mockingbird is mentioned in one monologue). Some of the scenes in the second half of the book are adapted from longer plays (pg 82 "Over the Rainbow") and so have well developed characters. Surface also includes magical characters (a spirit cat, a cricket) as well as inanimate objects to give students a chance at playing non-traditional characters. Dialogue in the book is engaging and differs from piece to piece so students can work on pace and tone when speaking. This is an excellent book and would be useful in a variety of classrooms including speech/communication, drama, English or social studies.

I was primarily interested in color plates illustrating Klimt's work, and this certainly provides this. However, the text is also very interesting. Klimt's very sexual works were actually done toward the end of the Victorian era, and must have been considered very scandalous. I certainly recommend this book to those with a specific intest in his work.

First of all, the book is not covered as shown in the amazon photo which shows the famous "kiss" painting. The book, apparently updated in 2006, shows a cover photo of Klimt's famous Danae (1907-8) oil on canvas painting. I think this cover is more provacative and more organic and softer than the famed Kiss painting which reveals a couple entwined in gold looking rather stiff. Danae was certainly a better choice for the cover. The book is definitely not written for the casual art reader. It is written with extreme depth as what I'd expect from a historian of the arts on a university research level. As verbose as it is, it has plenty, if not hundreds of photos of the famous works, including all of Klimt's paintings and lesser known sketches. The author discusses several of Klimt's famous paintings in depth and reviews various critics of Klimt's time period as well as Klimt's personal opinions and struggles. Culture, politics, and various movements in the arts is also discussed at length. This book is too deep for the casual browser or reader but makes a great coffee table book if only for the pictures alone. It is a high quality book and the pages are high quality (acid free) and glossy. The painting photos are rich and fully colored, better than other books I've bought on Klimt (where the precious gold paint is reduced to lousy brownish or greenish prints). The gold tones in this book, so famous in Klimt's work, are reproduced extremely well as well as the other vivid colors so characteristic of Klimt's work. It's a bargain to get this book at the price.

Artist Gustav Klimt can easily be brushed off as the Art Nouveau master of gilding and creator of iconic, erotic paintings such as "The Kiss," yet in this thoughtfully and thoroughly wrought biography-cum-art criticism the reader is treated to an in-depth personal and familial history, with diverse interpretations of his seminal works, and fascinating retrospective of the painter's lifetime body of work. Especially fascinating were the examination of resistance to Klimt's work for the Viennese Great Hall, the so-called "faculty paintings" that led to a mass protest by professors and led to his censure at a parliamentary level. Lavishly illustrated, balanced, and not afraid to delve deeply, Gottfried Fliedl has created a wonderful reference volume and inspiring, realistic view of an artist and his work. Klimt's work is so appealing because not only did he develop a unique way of presenting and creating images, he went above artistic representation and presented a philosophy that is still fascinating to explore.

This is a gorgeous and affordable collection of this remarkable artist. It is an especially lovely companion to the novel "Stolen Beauty" and the film"Woman In Gold", which are about a specific Klimt portrait. I located this first at my local library and am delighted to have found it for purchase.

klimt's work is endlessly fascinating... its eroticism, its mythological references, its composition. klimt captures the power and symbolism of color and shape in a way that is unique amongst artists in the canon. his images are not merely pictures of women (and a few men), but stories with complicated layers of meaning. all this delicate beauty could be easily lost in printing, but this book has somehow managed to preserve it, and it is amazing! the text gives biographical and historical context, which is always helpful, and even ventures into analysis -- i enjoy knowing other people's perspectives, because it helps me to read deeper into what i'm seeing. all the master works are here, as well as many treasures that are often overlooked. if you are interested in art nouveau, art history, symbolism in art, and/or art history you really should own this book. believe me, it is well worth the price -- i wasn't expecting much for (the price), and would have willingly paid much more. i wish i had it in hardback though...

Beautiful book. The illustrations are excellent and the author was informative in explaining the symbolism of Klimt many paintings .I have it on my coffee table in my living room so I can enjoy looking at it frequently.

This book was nowhere near the 1.1" thickness stated in the description. Though it was well done for its very small size. If you are looking for a good book on Klimpt I wouldn't recommend this.

Very nice collection of the Klimt works. I bought it as a gift and it was delightfully received.

This book features an excellent plot but is weighed down by numerous subplots which do little to enhance the impact of the story used to reveal the plot. A detective is assigned to a very complex murder investigation which becomes very challenging as she begins to make progress in solving the case. The story has a very slick conclusion making a good final impression about the book.

Typos, occasional missing and extra words but otherwise the writing is sound...and the story got better and better. My rating changed from 3-4 halfway to a firm five by the end.Croaker is a layered and complex and a great character.

really enjoy this series and have purchased all I can find. Really like the character and how she relates to her team and solves the murders, great read

I had a hard time following the threads of the story. At times it seamed that there was not a point relative to the main theme of this story. I feel that there could have been a better way to develop the main character. It’s not a book to be overthought.

Fey keeps it up. No idea how she does it. Entertaining novels with a strong woman, great at her job.

Loved this whole series. Great writer. Action packed thriller.

hard to put down very good read

Twisted drama. Wonderful!

Interesting read. Well written with a fair amount of useful information for those in management or leadership roles.

Conversations move life forward. They can also stop things from moving forward. Relationships end on conversations and begin. Teams are formed and broken apart. Goals are made, expectations laid out, visions happen, all around conversations.Feelings get hurt in conversations, lies are told, deception, betrayal, all of these can happen in conversations.Enter the book Crucial Conversations Tools for Talking When Stakes Are High. I heard Joseph Grenny, one of the authors speak on this topic recently at the leadership summit and got a lot out of his session. All of us know the feeling of this kind of conversation and we know that this is where life changes. Here are 10 things I got from the book that I have found helpful in my life and leadership:1. When we face crucial conversations, we can do one of three things: We can avoid them, We can face them and handle them poorly, or We can face them and handle them well. At the heart of almost all chronic problems in our organizations, our teams, and our relationships lie crucial conversations—ones that we’re either not holding or not holding well. Christians and church staffs are notorious for avoiding crucial conversations. This is why churches often split, people leave hurt and visions never move forward. Instead of doing the hard work in a conversation, they are avoided. When in reality, because of what is at stake (salvation) and because of the calling of Jesus, we should do a better job of having crucial conversations.2. Individuals who are the most influential—who can get things done and at the same time build on relationships—are those who master their crucial conversations. We all know this to be true. If you aren't very good at dialogue, you sit back in wonder at those who are. They are able to gain more influence, get more done and people want to be on their team and a part of what they are doing. This is why raising the value of this skill and getting better at it matters so much. Things move forward or stop around conversations.3. The mistake most of us make in our crucial conversations is we believe that we have to choose between telling the truth and keeping a friend. Grenny said this at the summit and it grabbed my attention. This is one of, if not the main reason, most conversations stop and things do not move forward. Fear. Fear of a relationship ending, something stopping, getting fired or hurting someone. Yet, if we don't tell the truth, we often can't be a friend.4. People rarely become defensive simply because of what you’re saying. They only become defensive when they no longer feel safe. The problem is not the content of your message, but the condition of the conversation. If you are a boss and want honest feedback and conversation, people can't fear for their jobs or that you will yell at them. Recently, there has been a lot of writing online about pastors abusing people, creating a culture of fear, yelling at staff members, elders and volunteers and it blows my mind. If you are known for that as a pastor, you should be embarrassed.5. Be careful not to apologize for your views. This can be easy to do and it often happens as a way to soften your opinion or the blow in a conversation, but you shouldn't apologize for what you think. It is what you think. It might be hard or unpopular to say, but don't shy away from it. You may be wise to change how you phrase it, but always be willing to share what you think in a conversation.6. One of the ironies of dialogue is that, when talking with those holding opposing opinions, the more convinced and forceful you act, the more resistant others become. I done this very easily in the past. Yet, this practice keeps people from buying in and helping to make something happen. When we do this, we don't understand why people aren't on board. The reason is the harder we push our way, the harder they push their way.7. Speaking in absolute and overstated terms does not increase your influence, it decreases it. The converse is also true—the more tentatively you speak, the more open people become to your opinions. The more harshly we speak or the more we give the impression that there is only one way, the less likely it becomes that people will speak up. Now, on issues like vision, it must be clear and have agreement. But, in conversations, if we give the impression that something has been decided or that we aren't open to suggestions, we will kill discussion.8. When we feel the need to push our ideas on others, it’s generally because we believe we’re right and everyone else is wrong. This is another way the previous one. If you find yourself pushing your ideas, you aren't having a good dialogue and instead are simply giving out orders. That may be your leadership style, but it won't accomplish a healthy team environment and in the end, your church or business will never reach its full potential.9. The more you care about an issue, the less likely you are to be on your best behavior. As a leader or a person in a relationship, you must learn this well. This was an eye opening insight for me. I get very passionate about things, as most people do, and when I do, I can shut down dialogue and end up hurting people. We do this, often unintentionally because we care about something, because we believe we are right and have the only way forward.10. The fuzzier the expectations, the higher the likelihood of disappointment. When a crucial conversation ends, there must be clear expectations and guidance moving forward. It cannot be fuzzy or gray. Otherwise, a conversation has not ended, it is simply on pause. All in all, this was an incredibly helpful book. Some of it covered things I already knew but showed some helpful insights. I've already seen a change in some of my conversations with leaders at my church and in my family through this book. Definitely one I'd recommend.

Excellent! One of the most life-changing books I've ever read (and I'm a voracious reader). What you'll learn in this book applies to your personal and professional life. As a woman, I wish I would have read this book years ago. I would have been better prepared to ask for promotions and been a better listener as a mother. I've purchased 7 books as gifts for college-aged kids. I wish I would have known about this book years ago. It's a book that you can re-read many times and still gain tips to help you through crucial conversations.

I ordered this book because it seemed useful and I could see one of my friends behaving differently. I bought this in mind that a big storm was coming. I have made mistakes during emotionally charged conversations/arguments before and didn't want to go down the same path again. Not too soon after I purchased it, that friend brought the storm.I took my time to read this and skim over it again before I entered the conversation because I didn't want to go in feeling attacked, defensive, or angry. I wanted to know how I could handle things. I didn't want to talk and head into a storm in the first place, but reading this book helped me feel less apprehensive about talking. I didn't want to go in ready to fight, I took my time talking on my own terms because I didn't want to lose my friend while feeling hot-headed. I explained my intentions on why I took long to not give off the impression that I didn't care. The book took me about 6 hours to read but I didn't really count. I flagged many pages to the point when I almost ran out of flags. There were very few parts I skipped towards the end (of examples/possible scenarios that I didn't think related to me), but most of the book seemed very relevant. The many examples helped. I think as a reader it helps to take written/typed notes of your own as you go, but I did not take much (I will though). When I felt I was ready to talk, I went in. I tried utilizing what I remembered. I did look at the smaller details to address them and tried not playing "trivia pursuit" on things that that were brought up. I got more of my friend's perspective. After we talked about our concerns, we found our misunderstandings and similarities regarding situations, as well as our viewpoints on both. I also brought up some possible agreements on how to avoid disrespecting each other in the future and if we did, the topic is left open so we can revisit our misunderstandings or perspectives again without making an ultimatum and to communicate more healthily if we think something is off between us. I didn't want to just get things off our chest, I wanted to make it easier for us to communicate in a similar manner (finding solutions) in the future. I wouldn't have gotten to this point if it weren't for this book. I honestly was prepared to lose a friend and in that scenario, none of us wins because we learned nothing about ourselves and others, we only saw our own viewpoints. By the end of our conversation, my friend seemed satisfied. We both have our similarities, though we handled things differently, this book played a part in bringing things up to light and how to go about it.There are other things I am going to work on tackling, such as things in the workplace and not in my personal life and hope it turns out okay for everyone too.I only read this once and skimmed it once after that, yet it helped me get this far. I really recommend this book to anyone who wants to get better at such conversations and arguments. It's worth rereading, not a read-once-and-drop-it kind of book.

I struggle with communicating effectively. As I considered my professional development plan for the year, I knew this was an area I wanted to focus on. I learned about Crucial Conversations from SHRM and decided to make it a first step. I'm glad I did.The book is chock full of good ideas on ways to communicate more effectively when it really counts. The authors provide great tips to illustrate the principles and make them real. There are no shockers here. Everything is pretty common sense and yet, it took this book for me to put them together.I have already used the principles I learned in the book in crucial conversations both at home and work. I've certainly not mastered the art yet, but I do feel more prepared and a bit less anxious in these high impact situations. I look forward to continuing to practice and improve over time.If your life requires that you interact with others, this book is for you!

Amazon.com Review

Maria Shriver's warmth, humor, and wisdom are evident on every page of this little book. Inspired by her commencement speech at the College of the Holy Cross, the book contains stories and insights that will be helpful, entertaining, and encouraging to graduates at every stage of life. The lessons themselves--"be willing to fail," "stand your ethical ground," "marriage is a hell of a lot of hard work"--are nothing new. What makes them interesting are the life stories that accompany them and Shriver's personable, friendly style. Reading this book feels like having a cup of coffee with a wise and funny friend. Tales of her first television experiences are surprising and hilarious, and she takes balancing motherhood and career to new levels--imagine postponing an interview with Fidel Castro to get your daughter to her first day of kindergarten! Each chapter is easy to read and ends with a focused lesson--kind of a bullet point from her original speech--that encourages readers to be ultimately true to themselves and their dreams, while cutting through harmful illusions. The last chapter, on laughter, is one to read again and again. Shriver maintains that without laughter not much else matters, and in life's toughest times it's laughter that gets us through. For anyone starting a new adventure--graduation, marriage, parenthood, career shift, or a milestone birthday--Ten Things I Wish I'd Known brings wisdom, laughter, practical suggestions, and a down-to-earth manner together into one fabulous gift. --Jill Lightner

From Publishers Weekly

Following the success of her 1999 bestseller What's Heaven?, in which she explained death to children, the NBC anchor woman expands on a commencement speech she delivered two years ago at Holy Cross College in Worcester, Mass., to share some of her life lessons with young people starting their careers. Although this slim gift book is positioned as a graduation gift, Shriver's natural audience is more likely to be busy working mothers like herself, and celebrity watchers who are curious about her thoughts on managing marriage, motherhood and career (Shriver and husband Arnold Schwarzenegger have four children). In lessons that are mostly about work and character, she shares simple notions that are fundamentally sound and that many adults will agree with: pursue your passion; consider no job to be beneath you; be willing to fail; realize that behavior has consequences; find a mentor. Unfortunately, the warmth and humor Shriver may have projected in person are forced on the page. Although she tries to build rapport with amusing stories of early faux pas and setbacks in her journalism career, readers may have trouble relating to her main predicamentAlack of appreciation from people who might have wondered if a beautiful, rich kid actually wanted a jobAas well as her idea of disappointment: not being as successful as Oprah or Diane Sawyer. Even so, Shriver's strength of character, her genuine admiration for her parents and her love for her family shine through. (Apr.) Copyright 2000 Reed Business Information, Inc.

Got the e version. Now I'm going to buy several print copies. Maria is a great writer, it's fun, it's interesting, it's autobiographical, it's short and sweet, and her advice is so true! Great gift -- not just for grads but for all!

I give this book to every High School or College Graduate.....and recently also gave it to my grandchild graduating from 8th grade because he is pretty mature. This book gives such good advice to young people going into another level of their lives. It is easy to read and such good common sense. The contents of the book started out to be a commencement speech and was later put into book form.

I am 56 and had I had this book to read in 1968 when I graduated high school I might have had the tools to do things a little better through my 20's and 30's. She gives you a rundown on what realistically to expect out of live, love, career and everything in between. I may have even been able to avoid my ex-husband!!!This is a must gift for any young person, maybe even younger than a high school graduate. It could actually put a kids expectations into the realm of reality without putting a damper on any of the joys of life. This is not a book that a conservative religious advocate would have to avoid. It contains simple comman sense about life and how it differs from what kids would often see on TV, movies, or any other media they would encounter. It doesn't tell you what belief system is best, just what life is most apt to hand you on any given day.It is easy reading and not very beefy, so even non-readers would benefit. They could use it as a reference book for a specific situation.Great Birthday or Graduation or Holiday gift and reasonable priced, too.

This book is a "Cliff Notes" for life - an excellent gift for graduates and worthy of review for those who have been "out in the real world" for awhile. It grew out of a commencement speech the author gave at Holy Cross College. Encouraged by audience members and her friend, Oprah Winfrey, she has expanded it into book form. Each chapter is arranged around a guiding precept detailed by anecdotes in her interesting and inspirational life. For instance: "Starting at the bottom builds character. It makes you hungry and determined. It is also a good way to find out, stunning as it may be, that you are not as smart as you think you are. " She then goes on to tell the reader about the bias against her when she started as an intern in her first "real life" newsroom. The news director thought she was a "dilettante ... 21 year old graduate from a fancy college - a RICH kid at that- coming in there thinking ` Ooooh fun! Can I play with the cameras too? Hey, I wanna go on the air!'" Maria showed him! "There was nothing I wouldn't do in that newsroom. I worked my *** off." (Wow! I didn't know the real Maria talked like that!) Now he's still in the small station newsroom and she's where she is.The book is composed, not of platitudes, but rather kernels of wisdom that need to be passed on through the generations - especially today where "common sense" and "common etiquette" are not common enough.I would give "10 Things" a 10 - but we are only allowed 5 stars.

I gave this book 3 stars, because some of the overriding principles might be of value to a recent graduate. I very well may have found some guidance from this book at that time in my life. However, as someone just a tad younger than Ms. Shriver, I learned little from her book. Moroever, her lessons are garnered from an unusually sheltered position. Risks can be taken, and certain choices can be made, when one does not need to work. Her "asides" about her wealthy family (and spouse) become a little irritating. Also, while she undoubtedly had to work hard to get where she is, she needs to stop trying to convince herself that her name and connections didn't open any doors. . .The writing, itself is not exemplary. It has a really "chatty" tone, which became a little irritating (especially the name dropping and the defensive "I'm not Oprah, you know. . .").

This is a well written, lovely book.

Got this a graduation gift, great little book, lots of good advice.

Great little book. Excellent advice
