The e-book explains that fishermen at that time were considered relatively prosperous and that St. Peter was married before he became Christ’s disciple. The book explains that it is necessary to apply high historical and literary criticism to determine St. Peter’s life. One last thought it is highly doubtful that the Romans crucified St. Peter upside down. The book is concise and possibly too concise because the book seems a little bit rushed. The book also describes the documents that the author used to determine who St. Paul was including his life before and after meeting Jesus.

Really enjoyed this historical overview of St. Peter. He was the most strong-willed and "human" of the apostles due to his up-and-down engagement with Jesus throughout his life. This book highlights and goes into detail on his activities and backs it up with not only biblical writings, but other historical writings and instances. It reads well and not too "educational" where you want to go away and come back. Good pacing and well versed.

A brief overview of one of Christianity's most important Apostles. Encourages one to explore his life in greater depth. I look forward to doing so.

While I have always been a Catholic who believes in the power of this sacrament, I benefited from Hahn's exposition of the power and importance of the Church's role in forgiveness. The reiteration of our Catholic belief in both venial and mortal sin is a well done, and easy for the potential convert to understand.I have always loved Hahn's books and this one is no different. Preparing for the Lenten Penance service, I read my copy of "Lord Have Mercy: The Healing Power of Confession. Scott Hahn, a convert himself to Catholicism, and now a Professor at St. Francis University, Steubenville, Ohio, and President of St. Paul Center for Theological Studies, has done it again. He is a very inspired, and well educated professor who takes delight in digging into the roots of the Church and finding the earliest references to this most important Sacrament of the Church. Going all the way back to the Book of Genesis and coming forward through the Bible to where Jesus institutes the sacrament with his apostles to forgive sins, "Whose sins you forgive, they are forgiven, and whose sins you loose, they are loosed in Heaven." Scott Hahn teaches how the Jewish faith involved the cleansing and purification of oneself before going into the temple, and how in the Book of Leviticus laws were to be formed, and all these Old Testamentreferences come not to be replaced, but fulfilled in the sacrament of penance. Both the book and the EWTN series are well worth the effort needed to study.

Confession sets our relationship right with God, which extends to our relationship with others. A right relationship with God transforms our soul so that we can cooperate with grace to live the good, the true, and the beautiful.

Really enjoy Scott Hahns writing. I am an adult convert to catholicism so my education is lacking. I really enjoy his books because they explain the important details in ways that make it easy to understand. He also is very passionate about the relationship with Jesus and it shows in his writing.

Scott Hahn has wowed me again! I am a convert to the Church, was brought in this past Easter 2015. I started watching Lord Have Mercy on EWTN, and I just had to get the book, and I am glad I did. Scott Hahn has helped me gain a very deeper and strong love for the Sacrament of Penance!

Love, love the Dash Diet. I followed it for 10 days using only the receipes in the original book, and lost weight without feeling hungry or deprived. Therefore decided to order the actual cookbook. I love the receipes and how they are separated by meal (breakfast, lunch, dinner, etc). Wonderful diet plan, simple to use, receipes are great, not difficult to prepare and are not time consuming.

Bought this over a year ago hoping for some inspirations especially for vegetarian/vegan ideas. Very disappointing whether a meat eater or vegetarian/vegan. I found most of the recipes mundane in nature and lacking in flavor although easy enough to prepare. I am keeping this more as a reference for quick DASH info than as a cookbook. For recipe ideas use Google. I found the Mayo Clinic’s website to be the better resource for recipes. Check the library before buying this book then make your decision.

Overall, the recipes are decent. I was hoping for more creative ways to make different foods, but this does offer a solid base to refer too. Most of the book is pointing out what many people know that helps with heart healthy, such as low fat, no fat, and low sodium ingredients. I think pictures of each recipe could change my thought about the recipes. I know if it looks good, I'm far more apt to try something new.

I have tried many diets over the years. Dash diet is one that I do not like to think of as a diet. It is more a lifestyle change. I get to eat lots of yummy foods, and this cookbook helped me along the way. I was very backwards in my flavoring. Often resorting to butter, and salt. After just a few of these recipes I was able to use what I learned, and update my favorites into healthier alternatives.

OMG! This is an excellent book! Been using the recipes listed inside and after a week have already dropped 5lbs. Decided to buy it because I am a a subject of hypertension and needed to get it under control ASAP! So, these recipes will make a difference. In a chronicle that effectively blends memoir with the drama of scientific discovery, Payne (Elephants Calling), an acoustic biologist at Cornell, describes her role in the discovery of infrasonic communication between elephants. As she does so, she recounts her 13 years' study of African elephants?observing their social and family structures and behaviors, including the digging of wells. A scientist's respect for the elephants, "my gray friends," and for the native scouts informs her work. Payne writes, "You appreciate the value of silence when you watch elephants at night.... Every animal in the herd listens when the herd is listening. To use silence so well: if I could choose for people one attribute of elephants, I'd choose this." I read this book before departing for Thailand to study elephants. It is a disturbing book, but I recommend it. We need to treat these noble beasts better and it's not easy considering their size and how much they must consume in a day. It all got me started on a quest to learn more about Elephants. We found several elephant rescue camps in Thailand that use tourist money to acquire urban elephants and ones that are used in Berma for logging...very bad for their backs. We signed up for three days where we would have our own elephant and would have to care for it. I found myself bonding with my Minoy, a large female that was assigned to me. It's hard to believe, but she bonded with me as well. When I left there was a very large tear in her eye. Elephants are amazing animals. This book was helpful to me in understanding how elephants communicate. I could feel them "talkin" to each other through my legs, but could not hear the subsonic messages.

Who knew that elephants are so sensitive to sound frequencies far below what our ears can detect? Not only that, they have some kind of telepathic connection as well. These gentle giants are extremely emotional, loyal, passionate and compassionate towards one another. They form tight family bonds and grieve for their dead. They are so endangered they could become extinct within a decade.I hope this kind of illuminting research will make the world aware of the critical danger elephants face, and take steps to ensure their survival. there's the World Wildlife Fund, and the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust, among many. And the iWorry campaign has petitions to sign to stop the illegal poaching of elephants for their tusks.

I can't help but wonder if their infrasonic vocalizations are what contribute to the palpable energetic vibrations I felt, sitting amongst the clusters of elephants in Northern Kenya.Katy Payne is one of the elephant researchers in Amboseli Park, Kenya, that helped to discover the infrasonic rumbles of elephant communication (along with Joyce Poole and Cynthia Moss) during the late 1980's and early 1990's. She stops short of using direct language on some of these topics, which left me longing to hear more of what the real Katy Payne is all about. But I applaud her for bringing up spiritual topics at all. It's unusual for a scientific researcher to make personal revelations. I found it refreshing that she did.

What a brilliant book. I loved reading about Katy Payne's experiences. I feel deeply moved by her point of view. Not only was it educational and informative, her expression touches the heart deeply. Thank you Katy for a wonderful inspiring book, sharing your experiences with these majestic beings, giving us insight into their habits and behavior.

I was introduced to Ms Payne through an interview with her on a podcast and I was fascinated by her story. This book filled in many of the pieces. Its beautiful in its observations and it is an interesting view about the life of a scientist studying among locals. I really enjoyed this.

LOVE this book~!!!

I chose this because I love elephants and am deeply concerned they will not be on this earth much longer. Katy Payne has done enormous work studying them, but it's been 13 years since she published this book. Thousands of elephants have been slaughtered by poachers for the ivory trade, including many she studied. It makes me sick to read about them.

Elephants sense so much of the world that's below our hearing, and their understanding must form the basis for their family and social lives. We can learn a great deal from them, Katie Payne helps us do that. Her patient observations and her dedication are truly inspiring.

An interesting story of finding happiness and joy. Add a bit of intrigue and danger and you have a very satisfying summer read. At times I felt I was reading a book written for young adults -- high school age, but was still a nice little story about two woman who find love and happiness by the end of the book. NO violence and no profanity, which was a huge plus for me.

I gave this book five stars because it has a little something for every reader. Terror, dread, love, romance, funny, sad... this book was a real page turner and I couldn't put it down. I also really loved the way the author wrapped up the end with a few surprises I wasn't expecting. Cabin by the Lake is so fast pased and easy to read that I would reccomend this book to almost everyone.

Overall, a good read. Likeable characters. Chapters 1 & 2 were choppy. There needs to be another chapter after 19. Chapter 19 ends abruptly and chap 20 picks up much later. A lot left unanswered. Chap 20 tried to catch it all up too quickly. I will read something else from this author

I stumbled upon one of this author's other books, Dodging a Bullet, and it was such an enjoyable, satisfying read that I immediately went to Amazon to find any other books she had written. I was disappointed to find that there were only two, but I bought them both immediately. I read this one first, and it was every bit as good as the first book I read. Ms. Douglas has a wonderful way with words, crafting books that make you feel like the time reading them was well spent, leaving you satisfied and happy. I could easily read 20 more books by this author without a single complaint. If you want to spend time in a really good book, this one's for you!

I have had this book on my kindle for over 6 months, and because of a challenge I am going back and reading books that I have had for a long time and not read, they also need to be by a author I have not read before. This was my first book by Desiree Douglas, I really enjoy suspense/thrillers and romances and this was a combination of both. Lydia has had a pretty rough life growing up and getting involved with the wrong man. She tends to be very naïve, and that leads to her getting herself into trouble. Having received this book sometime as a free book either from Amazon, or one of the other sites that you can receive books from I wasn't really sure what to expect, yet I was pleasantly surprised. The book was very well written, I enjoyed the characters in the story. I found it to be a quick read, and very entertaining. I will definitely read more books by this author and would recommend this book to my friends.

Thoroughly enjoyable... I am looking forward to reading more by Desiree Douglas. A nice blend of moods with some suspense, a good story with interesting characters, well written, clean with a surprising HEA that really feels good at the end. To appreciate it, I recommend the journey getting there by reading this book.

I needed a softer read, something to break up the angst filled books I tend to fall for. This was a knock out. Slow love, relatable characters, real situations. It was good. Don't let 22 chapters fool you, it was well written and executed, no holes in the plot, nothing left out. Very good read. I gave it 4 stars due to the slow paced life up until WHAM! Chapter 19/20 it was no stop tragedy, kinda threw me to the point I almost put the book down for good. None the less, it was worth finishing.

A book that grabs you from the start and keeps you interested till the end. Good characters and story line. This is a nice clean book. I do feel that a very important part was left out towards the end but still had a good ending.

There were times reading this book that Bly would communicate an idea which rang so true to me that I’d literally get physical shivers up and down my spine. It is that powerful and resonant. This book has made me see my own life and history with an illuminating radiance, and I’ve been able to discover bits and pieces of myself that were lying in dark corners.This book is not for those who live purely on a rational plane. If you despise poetry, for instance, you may find the book tedious, boring and difficult. If, on the other hand, you can read between the lines, visualize abstract metaphors, and appreciate poetic language, then this book will offer you a treasure trove of insight about yourself.

I bought this book, with the thought: "It was written by a man, about men, being manly!" I thought this book would be a celebration of men. But the book is not about men. The book is about boys and ritual into manhood, or as I perceive it: "How today's political correct world has emasculated male energy." This book talks a lot about "the Mother", "the Earth Mother" and golden apples. This book is for today, where every child is a special snowflake. Where there are no winners and losers, because whatever is wrong with you, it's not your fault. This book is not about men. It is a book about the psychology of boys and teens, and why being weak and emasculated is their true and right nature. I was hoping for something like the lore of John Henry or Paul Bunyan, but instead found only tales about boys. I find the anthology of Norse Myths is a better example of "A book about men", or Richard Marcinko's autobiography: "Rogue Warrior." If you, or your son, has "mama issues" then this book will probably help explain it. It is articulate, well researched an well written. Just not what I was looking for. Thank you.

I am 37 today. And the book has depicted my past year of experience and growth from a boy to the Man I feel now. Bly says there are 3 characteristics of a boy who did not yet become a man: naivete, passivity and numbness. For 6+ yrs in therapy I have revived my feelings and I don't feel numb any more, but I know why I need my emotions for and use them. But this past year has been the year when I lost my naivite and passivity. And the book has just come right in time to summarize my 37 years of growth to come into adult world. Read it earlier rather than later!

The depth of this book is stunning. I love this book so much I bought two additional copies as Christmas presents for my friends.Robert Bly is a fantastic writer. Part poet, part cultural anthropologist, he has a style that is both lush and crisp at the same time. He is clearly a fan of Joseph Campbell; the structure of his book evokes Campbell's style. However, this is no insult. Few have the talent or skill to write in such a breezy yet lucid fashion. And Joseph Campbell is one of the twentieth century's greatest minds. Clearly, Robert is a helluva writer.Robert has an ability to explain complicated emotional states with ease. His understanding of what men need is equally profound. And while the book is far from thick I've found my pace through the book to be deliberately slow; every page is so rich with thought it leaves me with much to ponder.If you're a thinking man who realizes that modern society does not value manhood and that we've been driven away from what men are supposed to be then this book must be read by you immediately. This book acknowledges and explains how deep and multi-layered men really are. This is Fight Club for intellectuals. By it immediately...then buy three more copies for your best friends and make them read it as well. That's exactly what I did!

Its excellent and easily read. Reading it as a mother for my sons.... though that kind of goes off the message the book is trying to tell, I am realizing. My own father was absent, and I bonded with cruel or callous masculine qualities. I adopted an immature masculine view of women, of myself becoming a woman. Only motherhood and the intentional relationships formed bw other mothers and midwives who helped me have my babies, and gurus of feminine sexuality I was lucky enough to meet while still in my 20s, shattered my "othered" view of myself, and helped me start to become liberated and in so becoming liberated, I could for the first time become genuinely curious about the masculine.

our society would be a better place if this book became required reading for every young man. bly taps into something beautiful and primal in describing both the masculine potential as well as why we so rarely see it in our world today.

I first read Iron John almost 20 years ago, and this time it is even richer then I remembered. I am using the book to lead a Men's addiction recovery group, and the men are as excited about the material as I am!

Helped my quest for understanding immensely.
