Thirty years ago,I used to cross the railway bridge at Kurla station in Bombay. There used to be a beggar girl sitting in the corner. She disappeared for a month, and when she returned, there was a hole where her eye used to be, and I could see right through to her skull.While I must say that this book is very well written, and well researched, I am not too sure about how to react to the book. To me, as an Indian, these are live, everyday stories. We see them all the time, and while I may be upper middle class, the lives of the poor and the rich impinge upon us. When I read a book like this, I feel that it is a SlumDog Millionaire of print.This is a book that has been written with a great deal of sympathy and this is good. This is probably a book for the Western world, and where the audience gasps with shock.To the reader, do read, but remember - this is India; where the poor jostle with the rest, where they laugh with each other, and where they glare at each other.
This is an exceptional book by any standard. Though it's a work of non-fiction, it reads like a novel, focusing as it does on real characters, their situations, and how they respond to them and to one another. As a result, one can't help but be drawn into their stories and to care deeply about what happens to the people one has come to know and worry about. The setting--a slum in Mumbai next to its modern airport--is vividly captured, as are the unique personalities of the inhabitants on which the book centers. Of course the book is heartbreaking in many ways, but it also inspires admiration for the way its people cope with their unjust and often desperate conditions. The book makes patently clear what it is like to live in a world that is fundamentally corrupt and fundamentally indifferent, in the process showing how misguided so many assumptions one might have about such a world actually are. Through it all a kind of harsh beauty shows through, partly because the writing in the book is itself so beautiful, and partly because the people display a kind of courage that is also beautiful. This is a book one will not soon forget. In its conception, in the research that went into it, and in the care with which it was written are all truly extraordinary. It deserves all the many awards it has received, and our attention both as readers and as human beings.
This is a wonderful book; very engrossing and amazing accounts of actual people living in Mumbai slums. There is video embedded throughout the book but unfortunately I did not realize this and downloaded it to my Kindle and was unable to view the video. Even without the video, it is an amazing book. If you were intrigued by Slumdog Millionaire, you will resonate to this book. Not a happy story but an important one - well told.
This book shows poverty in the very basic form. It was not an easy book to read, due to the content, but Katherine Boo did an excellent job. If I walked away with one thing it was that hope is basic in the lives of most humans living in such poverty. When basic needs are not met, all that seems to be left is existence, yet hope still seems to persist.The lack of things I take for granted, were present on each page. Clean water, abundant food, a warm home when needed and a cool one also, a bed to sleep in, free education for children, excellent medical care, this list could go on and on. As the world reaches out to those in poverty, can we not find a way to help preserve the dignity of those we help? Education lifts a person out of poverty, it must be made available to all children so they have a chance at a better life. Does anyone have the answers as to how we can deal with what needs to be done to lift them out of this cycle and meet their daily needs, and give them a better life?
Four stars - not because I like the subject and enjoyed reading this book - but because of the writing. This is a painful book to read and brings forth much to think about. Katherine Boo writes about several individuals living in a "smaller" slum on the outskirts of the Mumbai Airport. She follows these same individuals over the course of several years. What I love about her writing - she does not judge - she just reports as matter of fact. Personally, I don't know how one would keep a sense of hope waking up day after day and having to deal with surviving in this environment. This is a depressing book but one I recommend to anyone who is interested in nonfiction that is well written and will have an effect on you. Greed reaches far and wide and unfortunately, drives much of what happens in our world. We are all affected.
The author demonstrates a refined skill in story-telling. The subjects of this journal of her experience in India reveal people young and old who not only are incredibly interesting but people who easily engage the heart. The contrasts between the have's and have-nots are stark. The tensions encountered with so many people living at close quarters and the seemingly insurmountable obstacles imposed by a unforgiving economy would seem to breed despair. On the contrary, Katherine Boo shines a light on the people and places that nurture hope, activities that strengthen bonds of affection, and people who can inspire. I hope she will continue to write about what she has seen, heard, witnessed and shared - it widens the angle on which we view life.
The author has an unusual writing style that didn't really work for me. The story jumps around from person to person. The only thing that kept me reading was to find out the outcome of the trial, but it is not a compelling story. If I had not visited India last year I probably would not have bothered.
This story offers compelling insights into the devastating effects of inequality and poverty in India and this world. It illustrates how the wealth & comfort of the few is built upon the misery of the many and calls to the mind and heart to recognize the unacceptability of that fact
