He written and published twelve novels with worldwide sales exceeding five million copies and authored or co-authored ten non-fiction books on the modern military and nine books on firearms. Mr. Poyer has written or co-authored, The .45-70 Springfield, U.S. Winchester Trench and Riot Guns, and other U.S. Combat Shotguns, The M1 Garand 1936 to 1957, The SKS Carbine, The M14-Type Rifles, The SAFN-49 Battle Rifle, The Swedish Mauser Rifles, The M16/AR15 Rifles, The American Krag Rifle and Carbine, and The Model 1911 and Model 1911A1 Military and Commercial Pistols. I bought The American Krag Rifle and Carbine 2nd Edition by Joe Poyer on Amazon.com. Joe Poyer is a very knowledgeable author on military rifles. This book is very deep in history and provides a part-by-part analysis described in detail. All parts are described and matched to serial numbers and ranges. There is also a monthly serial number chart by production years. There is a complete exploded view included as well as instructions for assembly and disassembly of the rifle and carbine. I don't think that there is anything about this rifle and carbine that you would need to know that is not covered in this book. The only downside to this book is that it is 300 pages long with hundreds of photographs, charts, and drawings and the size is only 8.5 x 5.5 inches. I think the book would be much easier to use if it were 8.5 x 11 inches.

A useful book for a collector as an entry vehicle to learning about he Krag series of rifles and carbines.

I find the subject fascinating. This is a precise, detailed, well written and well documented history for the Krag collector. Others looking for a more general tome to accompany 55 Days at Peking may find the voluminous minutea of the Krag a bit tedious. As with all things, know what you want before you buy.

Methodical study of the Krag and it's use by those fighting at the time. Superb records of Krag firearms and their variations.

Good in depth information regarding a little known yet still widely used rifle.

Wish there was more books like it

Absolutely loved it! My 2.5 year old learned a lot from it.

Could be more compelling / explanatory for a non Islamic family interested in teaching different cultural norms to the kiddos. Not sure if this was the intent for this book so it's fine.

Excellent beginners book. Good for children, and adults.

This a very good book. It took 2-3 weeks fir it to arrive but was worth waiting for. The various activities attract children. My son is 4.5 years and he enjoyed the mazes. He as well followes some of the islamic manners such as sitting at the table and eating rather than eating while watching tv. I do recommend it.

luv the activities in this book; so creative and fun!

They performed as the duo-piano team, Smisor and Bastien. In addition, Jim was a Columbia Artist accompanist whose collaborative career included appearances with Richard Tucker and John Alexander. During this time Jim and Jane started writing music to address the needs of their students. This was the beginning of the Bastien piano books that have inspired so many piano students and teachers.The Bastien piano books have been published worldwide by the Neil A. Kjos Music Company since 1963 and are now translated into 14 languages. I own a music studio and exclusively use the Bastien books for teaching piano lessons. Great for all levels. Use these books!

Great purchase. So glad Amazon carries the exact books our piano teacher requires.

My students have been liking Bastien since I started teaching 5 years ago. I'll take Bastien over Faber and Alfreds because it does a more rounded and intuitive introduction of music methods. My students move more easily thru Bastien material over. I'd say not because Bastien is easier but it builds on itself appropriately preparing and leading on the student for what is next.

Bastien does an excellent job interweaving theory with actual music. I wasn't taught theory as a child so that's extremely important to me.

Piano teacher recommends it. This is the third book from this serious my daughter has been through.

My wife uses this series of books with her piano students. She likes it. Very convenient to get the books from here when the local music store is out of stock.

Abraham Verghese is a physician, a specialist in internal medicine and infectious diseases. His medical training was in Ethiopia and India. He came to the United States as an FMG (foreign medical graduate). After finishing his residency and a fellowship, he settled in Johnson City, Tennessee in 1985. Because of his work in Boston, he was the most knowledgeable doctor in the Johnson City area about AIDS, but AIDS was not yet present when he arrived. Four years later, when he left Johnson City, there had been dozens of deaths from AIDS and he had over eighty HIV-infected persons under his care. Johnson City, with its 50,000 residents, had a hundred-fold more cases than the CDC would have predicted for it. MY OWN COUNTRY is Verghese's account of his four years in Johnson City, Tennessee, fighting an ever-mushrooming battle with AIDS and coming to love a corner of Appalachia.Two subjects predominate. One, of course, is AIDS. The book is studded with case studies, as Verghese sees a wide array of the insidious ways in which AIDS manifests itself and kills. Most of his patients had obtained HIV elsewhere and had moved back to the Johnson City area once they became ill. Acquisition for most was via unprotected homosexual contact, but for a few it was through tainted blood or plasma or via heterosexual intercourse. The disease was hellish in and of itself, but often the social ripple effects were also dreadful -- from contempt and rejection on the part of family members and community, to refusals to treat by doctors and dentists, to boycotting by undertakers. As Verghese writes, "I was improvising constantly to deal with the moral, ethical and social subtleties that were so much a part of this disease."The second principal subject involves medical practice in general in this country. When Verghese chose to specialize in infectious diseases, he relegated himself to second-tier status among his physician colleagues, especially financially. Medicine was transforming itself into a get-rich business, and the big money was in conducting processes and performing procedures, as opposed to diagnosing patients and being their primary care physician. As Verghese came to realize, proper treatment often required a holistic approach, which in turn required an understanding of the dynamics of the patient's relationships with family, friends, and community. In the thirty years since, the economics of medicine has gotten more out-of-control, and the quality of medical care has decreased. Even in 1985, many of the doctors and medical staff in rural hospitals and in urban public hospitals were foreign-trained, working in the U.S. with visas. If the U.S. continues to insulate itself from the world at large, how will these roles be filled in the future?Verghese, however, does not harp on these and other social/medical policy issues or become preachy. Foremost, MY OWN COUNTRY contains umpteen different tales of human suffering and endurance, surprisingly often heroic and dignified in nature. For every incident of contempt and rejection, there is one of care and compassion. Two heroes in particular stand out -- Essie Vines, who cared and advocated for her brother Gordon, and Fred Goodson, who did likewise for his partner Otis Jackson and also was the principal organizer and force behind the local AIDS-support group. Anecdotally, there are a handful of intriguing "human interest" stories, such as "John Doe", a debilitated old man with a stroke, diabetes and pneumonia who had been left at the emergency room entrance while the family went to "park the car" and were never seen again; or Vickie McCray, who got HIV from her husband, who unbeknownst to her often had had sex with a male friend from his youth and then went on to give the virus to Vickie's sister as well (Vickie told Verghese that "ever since I found out he has AIDS, I've been feeling too sorry for him to be angry with him. No one deserves to be sick lik'at. No one deserves to lose their mind lik'at.").MY OWN COUNTRY is not a perfect book. At times, Verghese goes too far down rabbit trails of marginal relevancy (especially when he describes geography and the routes from one place to another); the book is a tad manipulative; occasionally Verghese, although a truly remarkable person, comes across as a little holier-than-thou; and the sentimental reference to "my own country" seems a wee bit hypocritical given that Verghese left the Johnson City area after four years, never to live there again.That said, and even though the book now is over twenty years old, MY OWN COUNTRY deserves to be read. It is interesting throughout, it is very readable, and reading it will surely broaden almost everyone's horizons of humanity.

The thought of me reading and being transfixed by a book about the Aids Epidemic in rural Kentucky in the 1980's as told by a transplanted Indian doctor seemed pretty remote. But as I heard each of these patient's heartbreaking stories and how this internist tries to humanly treat their health concerns with compassion and love, I couldn't stop reading. Abraham Verghese paints a vivid literal picture of life in rural Kentucky and the personal struggles of the patients and the doctor who feels compelled to treat them when other medical professionals shun them. These deeply personal tragic stories will bring you to tears and touch your heart. I highly recommend this book and Verghese's other best seller "Cutting for Stone".

In My Own Country is an autobiographical narrative of Dr. Abraham Verghese and his work as an infectious disease physician in rural Tennessee during the early years of the HIV pandemic. Verghese is a powerful writer, and his rendering of the AIDS crisis immortalizes the victims of the AIDS crisis in Johnson City. More than that, Verghese offers a rare perspective of the time—he starts out his story as little more than an outsider stumbling into an interesting medical phenomenon. He was not gay, had little connection with gay community, and was neither an advocate nor an enemy of gay men. Yet, over the course of the novel we see how their stories begin to envelope him. At first Verghese seems like an interested outsider, and we wonder if his fascination is purely medical. But when the young men come to him he learns their names, and he asks for their stories. Perhaps because he is a real foreigner in a place that has made them to feel foreign too, they open up to him. Giving his patients the opportunity to speak is one of the few medicines Verghese has. Medically speaking, he offers little in terms of real therapy. He becomes a doctor specializing in palliative care.Over the course of the novel, Dr. Verghese shows his readers the immense role a physician can play in the lives of patients. His patients are dying. They are afraid. There is little he can do to ease these physical pains. But he is there for them. And it is clear that many of them feel a true patient-physician bond with him as he helps them navigate their journey from life to death. This isn’t an easy process for the patients dying of AIDS, or for Dr. Verghese.As we see a community form around his perseverance to treat his patients with dignity, we also see how his job begins to overtake his life. As Verghese becomes indispensible to his patients, his relationship with his wife and family deteriorates. We feel for the doctor as he misses important moments in his personal life. We can feel how he is pulled in different directions. He needs to choose between his patients and his family. We see how he chooses his patients. By the end of the novel, it is clear that Dr. Verghese is burned out. His marriage is strained and he has nightmares about the infection that consumes his working hours. We end the book with the same uncertainty that he feels. It turns out that the doctor’s calling has drained his spirit.The book ends with Dr. Verghese making an important discovery about the pattern of AIDS in rural areas, and deciding to leave Johnson city for somewhere new and more detached. It is a conclusion that fits the topic. This book is not just about a viral pandemic. It does a good job of detailing HIV before treatments, but it’s mostly about the evolution of an idealistic physician. Read this book if you’d like to understand how incurable diseases affect both patients and their healthcare providers. You’ll get a glimpse into the hidden and sometimes heart-wrenching world of doctor-patient relationships.

Nadezhda Mandelstam's haunting memoir describes life with her exiled poet husband during the 1920s and 1930s in the Soviet Union, as the noose of the government gradually tightened around the intelligentsia and culminated in the years of the Great Terror, when no one was safe. She and her husband were reduced to begging and tramping from one town to another, knowing that there would be no escape for him. Her memoir is full of keen insights and above all, love for her husband and his poetry. While many people lived through those years with a dimly growing awareness of what was happening, the Mandelstams saw it all very clearly and understood exactly what it meant from the beginning. As she notes, "We lived among people who vanished into exile, labor camps or the other world, and also among those who sent them there." Joseph Brodsky, a Nobel Prize winner, went to meet Nadezhda Mandelstam at the end of her long life and wrote that she sat in a dark corner of her kitchen, "The shadow so deep that the only things one could make out were the faint flicker of her cigarette and the two piercing eyes. . . . She looked like a remnant of a huge fire, like a small ember that burns if you touch it." A huge fire, indeed.

As a teacher of a course on the Cold War, I am sometimes appalled by the near total ignorance of young American students regarding this half century and of the nature of the Soviet regime. This memoir by the wife of prominent Soviet (Jewish) poet Osip Mandelstam gives a clear insight into the daily lives of the thousands of people who were simply set aside by Stalin and his successors for their beliefs. While Nadezhda did not suffer the harsh imprisonment of Yevgenia Ginzburg (as told in "Into the Whirlwind") her story is just as poignant.

The book is a detailed commentary on what it was like to live in the Soviet Union during the 1930s and the purges. It doesn't discuss the show trials of the Old Bolsheviks, which surprised me, but the widespread arrests of nearly everyone else created an atmosphere of constant fear. The book is an important document.

It is a deeply moving, personal account of life in the Gulag under Stalin. Lacking the grandeur of Solzhenitsyn 's account, it may be more moving for its very intimate telling.

As nearly every reviewer points out, the main theme of this book is what it was like to live under Stalin, and the author's penetration into what terror did to the character of the Russian people can scarcely be bettered by any other commentator I have read. Like plums in this pudding there are also chapters on Osip Mandelstam as an essayist and public intellectual, fields where he was possibly as distinguished as he was in poetry. I was grateful for the many assessments the author made of the importance of various literary figures, some quite obscure. It can be so difficult to obtain the cultivated Russian's viewpoint of various creative artists.I have the p-back edition with an introduction by Clarence Brown, a competent and prominent Slavist. The translator, Max Hayward, states that he is responsible for the notes at the end of the book. Curiously, in the notes he uses a false cognate, "procurator", which he correctly translates as "prosecutor" in the main text. Hayward's reputation was tarnished by his hasty translation of "Doctor Zhivago", which he admitted to being ashamed of, and I cannot ascertain whether this translation is accurate. Be that as it may, Hayward had a great feeling for language and his elegant text reads rapidly. There is a good index and this book can serve as a reference book on a time and figures now rapidly vanishing into obscurity.

I'll start by reiterating George Steiner's quote, "Nothing one can say will either communicate or affect the genius of this book. To pass judgment on it is almost insolence--even judgment that is merely celebration and homage."And that is the truth, well-put.In this lucid tome Mandelstam's widow recounts the years of their exile, the real life people whom they met in their travels, the day-to-day hells of the Stalinist regime, the tiny mercies and kindnesses of others, the cowards and the idiots, the drive to create art out of the most dehumanizing experiences, the triumphs and pitfalls of the human spirit... I'm getting too flowery here, and this is a book that deserves to be read, not praised by some spoilt American white-boy pseudo-intellectual like myself. Written similar to a Patrick McManus book. A lot of small stories with a sense of humor and perspective.Clever, smart, realistic, spiritual, real, and also slightly political/societal.The author could have "timelined" it better, as it is "scattered around" as far as timeline.Yet, if you are a smart enough person, you can figure out the points being made, and that the dates are not exactlyimportant as the content of Mr. Debogorski's character/life.You can tell when the "author" takes over the book, and Mr. Debogorski is being quoted/taking over.I do not review books, but this one is underrated. I am sure that some fans of the show, might not exactly like this book.That is just how it is. It might just help them with perspective they have not earned/experienced.This is a coming of age, trials of life book, and I think most people do not experience any of it much anymore.I am writing from a 27 year old man's perspective, and that is that. I read Russian Literature, French Literature, all the supposed, smart guys, but, this book is so well rounded to me. "my type" of book.Thank you!

Matter of factly written.about a life lived.he tells it all.&it's written plainly no polished edges.he tells us his life as he's lived it & seen it.after I read this I think there should be another.if you want an honest story & a story from a working man's perspective this is it.

Alex Debogorski "talks" to us in this autobiography in his usual TV language, taking us from his childhood days to where he is now. Coming from poor Polish immigrant parents, he's living his life in a good, clean fashion molded from his strict Polish-born father. Taking advantage of every possible way of making decent money growing up, he exemplifies himself as a truly, hard worker brought up in a solid Catholic background, which he never forgets, always remembering his poor days and being thankful to where he has come. This is an honest depiction of growing up, working and living in the coldest parts of Canada. I'll never forget him stating that, although he is a Canadian, he hated communism so much that he wanted to fight in the Vietnam war to help his American friends.

Way too much of the book is tall tales about growing up . . . there's a lot of hot air and gas that doesn't need to be there and contributes nothing . . . pass the gas . . .

I have always admired the truckers, the rigs they drive, the things they see and hear. Alex is a great story teller. This book is full of stories about his life. Told as only the best story teller can. It reminded me of when I was a youngster and the adults would talk about the past. Easy to read and a book to share

I like learning about different cultures and the way the people view life. Alex telling about his family history and how he grew up helped me to understand him more. He has knowledge and a faith in God that a lot of people think they have and dont.This is a good book. After I started reading it I didn't want to put it down. It was like a fast pasted action mystery book, You never knew what was coming next. Of course it helps to understand the trucking industry a little to understand some of the things Alex talks about. But over all I would recommend this book.

This was my first book on my Kindle, and i am so happy that i read it. I first heard Alex on a radio show promoting his book, I though he sounded interesting and fun. My wife and i stated watching the show and realized there was some depth to these guys. So I couldn't wait to read the book. I almost couldn't put it down. I laughed along the way. Alex is an inspirational man, a tough guy with a heart of gold.The book is written as a collection of stories that Alex would entertain the other truckers, over the CB, with on late night runs
