Not enough detail, just a lot of opinion without the detail to support the opinion or help the reader to develop the same experience and opinion.

This book has pretty pictures; that is the book's only positive trait. The book has numerous flaws, which have been covered by other reviewers. However, other reviewers haven't discussed the problem I had with this book: a severe lack of focus.Instead of focusing on the book's supposed subject--"How to Create a Beautiful Chicken-Friendly Yard"-- the author apparently decided she would rather superficially talk about many, MANY other topics. They include:1. Coop design (lots of pretty pictures, only one "how to do this" plan with measurements)2. Predator descriptions and deterrent methods (Mostly accurate info, but why is this discussed in a garden design book?)3. How to pick chicken breeds (In every basic chicken keeping book in the world--why waste valuable space in this supposedly specialized book with a rehash of that same information??)4. How to clip a chicken's wings, etc. (What does this have to do with garden design? The author may have her reasons, but doesn't explain them.)5. A brief rundown of other poultry types, including turkeys, geese, and ducks. (Huh?? Why are ducks discussed in a book that is supposed to be about chickens??)6. She wraps up the book by listing common chicken diseases and parasites. (?!?)I have had my chickens for almost 2 years and own many basic chicken keeping books; I didn't need another one. What I DID need was tips on how to incorporate my chickens into a garden--what plants to avoid, what plants they'd love, what plants would benefit from the extra nitrogen from chicken poop. Unfortunately, there is very little information of this sort included in the book, and what little there is is VERY difficult to find, even if using the index.In addition to all the unnecessary and unwanted basic chicken keeping advice, the author decided to include basic gardening and composting advice--again, losing focus of what this book is supposed to be about. This book reminds me of a high school freshman's first English essay: cluttered, unfocused, and ultimately unhelpful.If you're actually interested in what the book claims to be about--successfully incorporating poultry into a holistic garden design--a better choice would be "The Small Scale Poultry Flock", by Harvey Ussery.However, if you're just interested in a cute coffee table book, I suppose this may fit your needs.

My girls tore up the backyard landscaping, so I quarrantined them in their run. Well, that just produced stressed chickens and the egg laying stopped immediately. This book has such great advice! I'm going to follow it and I know, with the help of ideas and commonsense advice from this book, my girls can live a happy life, running free through my gardens and helping me with the most dreaded chores! Bottom line, they're out of the coop, happily gobbling up garden pests and turning over the dirt for me, in preparation for spring planting. Started laying again as soon as they were sprung. I highly recommend buying this book, especially for beginning chicken keepers as I am. It answered so many questions that I had about their care, plus give such great advice on laying out a garden, and great ideas for how to keep them out of the landscaping you want them to stay away from. Plus, the photos are beautiful, the book is an easy read, and the advice simple to follow.

I was rather disappointed in it. I wanted more information about what plants that chickens would be more likely to avoid, and better ideas of how to nicely fence the chickens away from fresh beds or plants. She says that chickens will usually leave established plants alone, but I guess I have unusual chickens, as they eat everything in the yard. Also no idea as to how to get the chickens to use just one area as a dust bath instead of having shallow fox holes all over the yard. She essentially says to have raised beds throughout your yard and gravel or similarly paved walkways. I wanted to know how to have my chickens have the lawn to stroll around in without them destroying the flower beds.

This book combines two of my favorite things: Chickens and Gardening...with numerous photos to drool over! And excellent information and tips!Is it Spring yet??? I can't wait to get out there!I have always been an avid gardener, and the decision to keep a few hens in my yard was a natural extension of that. New to chicken-keeping, with a small flock of 5 laying hens (now 7 months old) in a small suburban, almost urban, backyard, I have quickly become quite passionate about my new hobby! Even though I probably can't let my girls free-range the yard completely, this book has given me many ideas for chicken-friendly plantings and ways to better incorporate my coop and run into my property.The author lists plants, shrubs and groundcovers that can be grown for food/forage, as well as chicken-resistant plants that can add color to the garden, but are not likely to be eaten or trampled by your hens. This information alone is worth the price of the book. I've not seen a more comprehensive listing elsewhere, and the internet forums are filled with conflicting data/opinions as to which plants are edible or toxic.I'll also be re-seeding my "lawn" areas with what the author calls eco-turf, an ecological seed mix containing clover, that will provide excellent forage for my girls.The color photos throughout the book are so lovely that I know I'll be keeping this book close at hand for the remainder of the winter, as I plan and dream about creating my own, beautiful chicken garden this spring!

This book is magnificent. It tells the story of the revolution with an approach which is both general, and honing in on hyper specific stories within the revolution that really works to create a stunning narrative progress for the revolution. As far as general introductions to the subject go, this is almost unbeatable, and is an excellent book for the centeniery of the revolution.

The audience for this book is more people interested in politics, history, Russia, and Marxism rather than the average reader of Mieville's fiction (I personally fit in both boxes). It's a very well researched and told story of the revolution, and a particularly good telling for those people who do not already have detailed knowledge of the characters and events. Additionally, Mieville manages to subvert a lot of the common narratives of the revolution. Lenin appears throughout the book, but his agency here is (rightly) downplayed. Instead, the revolution appears to be the product of acts of circumstance and fortune, along with various soldiers' brigades who prove irrepressible. Indeed, one of the most interesting dynamics here is between the Bolsheviks and the soldiers they represent. Who is really leading who? Furthermore, we see how the Bolsheviks are internally fractured. This is not a one-man, or one-party show, but a messy complex of actors.Lastly, the book is a slow burn and by necessity involves a lot of exposition (of characters, of groups, of committees). It really picks up midway, when Kornilov's army threatens to destroy the revolution, and peaks in the final chapter when events poise on a knife's edge. The reader's persistence really pays off. Actually, I'm in awe of Mieville's ability to translate his research and the ungodly mess of characters and events into a highly readable book.

This is a thrilling account of the tumultuous year 1907 in Russia and of the Russian Revolution in October of that year. In the Introduction Mieville writes that the book "...does not attempt to be exhaustive, scholarly or specialist. It is, rather, a short introduction for those curious about an astonishing story, eager to be caught up in the revolution's rhythms." I must have been eager because, immediately upon finishing, I read it a second time.

I'm really kind of mad right now, because this fantastic history ends with October. I guess I can't complain, it is in the title. If you're looking for a clear and concise history of the revolution from February through October, this is your book!

Not a bad intro to the Russian Revolution. He gets a lot right, doesn't use the usual virulently anti-Bolshevik sources. He doesn't do Lenin justice as he seems to view him as some kind of opportunist -- which is very far from the truth. This is not indispensable -- Rabinowich's books, E.H. Carr's books, Trotsky's "History of the RR," area all far more detailed and historically accurate. But those all require much more of commitment than casual interest. And so many books on the RR use awful methodology and shoddy sources.

Complete readable overview of a very complex period of history...a must

Terrific popular history from a great speculative fiction writer and all-round Bolshie!

Succinct but comprehensive, and infused with Mieville's style. Readable, informative and above all, an exciting account.

I work for a professional services firm and manage our technology innovation activities. This book offered some incredibly helpful ideas for framing and assessing opportunities. I know I'll be reading it several times over again. There are a few chapters that I just don't get, but maybe those are more applicable to other industries. I just skip to what works for my situation - there's plenty of great content to digest.

A very good breakdown of different methods of process improvement. Provides real world scenarios that are relatable and easy to comprehend. This book was a text book for one of my MBA classes. In fact it was one that I turned to quite often for references and examples in most of my papers in my Process Improvement class. Some of it seemed a little wordy but overall a good read

Great book, a great starting point for so many who think they know what systematic innovation is all about, can't recommend Phil Samuel's high enough.

Upgraded from the first edition (Kindle version) to this second edition (hard copy). The book was indispensable and led to the discovery of several other innovation techniques, books and online content. I ordered the second edition in hard cover the moment it was available, even though the Kindle version was not yet available. I got a chance to read through a few chapters of specific interest and found the upgraded content as well as new charts/exhibits/diagrams very useful (different perspectives). Definitely worth the upgrade!

Every professional should have one of these. If you want to stay relevant it's a great book to have. Following thought leaders and seeing talks based on the subjects will help you even more. So far, I've recommended this book to 3 other friends and they're all excited about it too.

This book is one of the best in terms of creativity and business innovation. The tools are explained briefly and synthetic, showing when to be used and the expected results. The authors don't use a lot of talk: they go straight to the point.However, I felt that some tools were somewhat complex and its presentation only scratch the surface - which caused some misunderstandings. The literature sources could also be more numerous.

After teaching graduate-level counseling courses and living with a severe mental illness for nearly two decades I was that skeptic!This book is the key to understanding why certain foods simply make you feel rotten. For some people, the overgrowth of Candida can cause a spectrum of mental illness symptoms (ADD, Anxiety, Depression, Bipolar, Schizophrenia, and even schizoaffective disorder). I use the anti-inflammatory diet outlined and am in the process of completing the antifungal regiments as well. Know that the diet alone will not make a significant difference and the food cravings will be terrible! With antifungal treatments, a person can have complete remission of symptoms. Infact, for the first time in 18 years, after trying more than 37 different combinations of medications and too many hospitalizations/institutionalizations to count, I am now medication free. My need for micronutrition is eliminated because my gut can finally absorb the nutrition from my food without candida competing for nutrition.It is life changing. Finally! A real answer! This protocol produced highly effective symptom relief from schizoaffective disorder-bipolar type without nasty side effects caused by medications.Now am in the process of heal my brain's neurotransmitter receptors. My son has been on "Feast without Yeast" diet and Nystatin for 4 months now and he is almost free of all autistic symptoms.For parents considering a diet, this diet is BETTER than GFCFSF, GAPS or SCD diet. Apparently, SCD diet as well as others include foods full of mold and toxins which cause repetitiveness, slow brain function, and promote yeast overgrowth.This diet will help recover fully from autism if a child is 3 years old or younger and will help get symptoms under control and get a stable recovery to some extend for older children.My son was very autistic and had no speech when he was 2 years old. He was extremely repetitive. He no longer made eye contact, no longer seemed to hear, no longer seemed to understand the 5 words he sometimes spoke. He started having 5-10 tantrums per day and he would wake up every night screaming and head-banging on the floor. He had dark circles under his eyes, pale skin and a fear of separation with mother. He was lining up cars in a long line, later he was replacing toys from one box to another. He stopped saying "Hi" and "Buy". He stopped pointing at objects.My son is now 2 years and 8 months old, and he is almost free of any autistic symptoms. He is saying 6-8 word sentences, his eye contact is excellent. He follows my directions, he is curious about everything. Some days he is a bit repetitive (he is not completely free of yeast yet). But most days he is a normal kid, he is progressing, learning, and just being a happy boy. Right now he is learning language just like a normal kid. He is repeating, rephrasing sentences, and asking questions. He has a great sense of humor, he understands emotions. His role play is amazing, he recreates stories from books with toys..Just a few words about my son's medical history. He was a healthy boy. He never took any antibiotics. He never had any problems with constipation or diarrhea.He was breasfed for 8 months. He reacted badly to MMR vaccine when he was 13 month old. His autistic symptoms started when he was 18 months old.When my son started a GFDFSF diet, he was getting better. His eye contact got better and he was generally more with us. However, he had some bad days and some good days. Something was setting him off.We tried multivitamins, probiotics and GFDFSF diet. It helped somehow, but didn't treat autistic symptoms completely.With "Feast without Yeast" diet and Nystatin, we had immediate and noticeable results. I believe that with this diet my son will be free of all autistic symptoms within a year or so.Author of this diet, Dr. Bruce Semon has an autistic son. He treated his son and since then many other kids. He says that his diet and treatment worked for every autistic kid he's ever treated.My son had an OAT Urine test, Stool test and Hair test for heavy metals from the Great Plains Laboratory.An OAT Urine test showed high levels of waste product of Candida yeast overgrowth.Stool test didn't show Candida yeast , and in most cases stool test doesn't detect yeast.Hair test for heavy metals didn't show heavy metals."Feast without Yeast" diet is not as difficult or strict as SCD diet. However, this is a long-term treatment. Most kids have to stay on this diet for a few years. It works so well for my son and I believe this will help other children as much as it helped my son.A few notes on the diet:1) Diet works only in combination with Nystatin. Diet doesn't work on it's own.1/3 of success is due to the diet and 2/3 of success is due to Nystatin.2) All multivitamins and especially vitamin B have to be discontinued. They interract with Nystatin and it doesn't work if vitamins are taken during the treatment. Vitamin B6 and B12 are made from yeast (or made with the help of yeast), so you're pouring gasoline on the fire when you take high-dose Bs (like B6 or B12) orally.3) You need to read the book "Feast without Yeast" to implement the diet. 4) Probiotic cannot be taken with Nystatin. We just tried to introduce a D-Lactate probiotic to my son and we had a major set back. It's best not to take probiotics.A few notes on Nystatin:1) We got Nystatin prescription from our regular pediatrician. We showed him OAT Urine test results and the book "Feast without Yeast". He gave us the prescription and 3 refills without any problems. We came back for another prescription with my son and showed him the progress my son is making with Nystatin. He was surprised by his progress, and gave us a second prescription with 2 refills.2) You have to make sure your child gets a full dose of Nystatin every day. The drug tastes very bad. I have to use a syringe to spray this drug to my son's mouth. I give him stickers every time he takes Nystatin and he forgets about the "aftertaste" right away.This is the only way to give Nystatin to your child. Giving it with water or with other vitamins won't work. Your child will probably refuse to take it as it's very bitter. He can have some peeled raw apple sometimes.Vitamins:I am giving my son the following vitamins and they don't interfere with the diet:1) Calcium powder with Vitamin D 800mg/day (Kirkman Labs)2) Vitamin D and K (Liquid vitamin from Thorne Labs)3) Zinc cream (Kirkman Labs)4) Epsom salt baths (for Magnesium Citrate)5) Magnesium Citrate 250mg/day (Pure Encapsulations)6) Vitamin E liquid should be fine when taken. My son doesn't take it right now, but I will update my post once we introduce Vitamin E to my son.

This is one truly beautiful book. It is nicely written and more than interesting. Though oversized and lavishly illustrated, it does not read like a coffee table book but more like the best kind of text book. Some may consider that a criticism, but a really fine text book is valuable and this has definite hints of that kind of writing. I have learned a tremendous amount about a part of the world which is rarely touched on by our social studies curriculum. As I've suspected for some time, we really should try to include a unit on the contributions made by the people of this part of the world over the course of history.

Volume 2 is far superior to volume 1. Just about 1/3 done but I would recommend it.

Good solid material for an introduction to the field. Pictures help create context of the prose very well.

This is the second in a four volume series by the same author and weighty hardback at least twice the size of the volume I had expected to arrive through the post. But this is a terrific book, stunningly illustrated with full colour pictures that show the landscape, the archaeological artefacts and the ruins of the Central Asian societies that traded along the ancient Silk Roads. It was no surprise to discover that the author had originally studied Art History and that he subsequently explored parts of Central Asia in person. There is hardly a page of this book without a useful image or photograph to augment the text. Some are of museum objects, or the ruined remains of significant buildings, while others are placed to give the reader a glimpse of the various wilderness landscapes through which these trading 'roads' passed. The quality of the glossy paper used throughout the book does justice to these pictures. In particular, the explanatory maps that accompany the text are the best I have seen, with the information superimposed in colour onto satellite images of the entire area. This is a real boost to the reader's understanding of the regions, the distances and the terrains that it covers.The text is well written and historically accurate while the list of secondly sources referenced is formidable. I was also pleased to see an acknowledgment that religious beliefs, as well as material culture, were conveyed by the merchants, soldiers and travellers who used these ancient trails through desert places. This is especially evident in a section in chapter two on the east/west influences in Buddhist Gadhara art, located in modern Pakistan. Chapter four on the Tarim region was also interesting, beginning with an acknowledgement of the previous explorers of this place. So, over all, I think this book is a 'must' for anyone interested in the ancient history of Central Asia and the Silk Roads.

This is a good history book. I look forward to the rest of the series.
