Too many trees to see the forest. This was written by a government historian and might be OK for the military to look at the command structure and the decision making and the conflicting orders. But after awhile this was so difficult to follow and convoluted that it took a determined effort to complete. The fact that there were very few maps and on Kindle they are postage stamp size made it hard to follow the narrative. Happily, I could call up maps of France on the internet and more or less follow the narrative, but what a pain. The narrative was also often made obtuse in that the author skipped back two weeks or more following a different army group without giving the reader a good heads up that the subject matter had changed. Also, it was not always obvious when the author jumped from talking about a group in the Allied army to a group in the German army, until maybe a couple of paragraphs after he changed armies..... The author made the earlier chapters more readable, but seemed to get tired of the subject himself as he moved forward in the book and used almost the same verbiage about this division passed through that division, while the first division was moved to reserve or verbiage similar to that. I did learn some new facts about the battles in France, but it was a tough slog through this book and I was glad it was over, even when it abruptly ended before the Allied armies got to the Rhine.....
I think this is one of the heaviest books I’ve ever encountered on Kindle. And yet, I stuck with it, recognizing that this was a work important to any WWII historian, or even casual buff. I was transfixed by the sheer detail of the Allied fighting advance out of the Normandy beachhead into the European heartland, up to the German frontier. The author follows battles down to small unit engagements and traces their impact upon the greater battles. Sometimes, even down to rifleman level. But you never get behind the sights of a Garand or Mauser. And that’s okay because the battles keep moving, and never let you go.I loved this book. And recommend it unreservedly for any serious WWII history addict.
With better tactics and weapons we would not have lost so many men. The Germans were really tough and it looks like they only lost because the Allies had overwhelming air superiority. Our guys really had a tough time. I do not know how they endured it. They were heroes. They needed better technology when fighting in those hedgerows. I think we lost too many men because we went at it too aggressively. We should have taken our time a bit more and clobbered them with artillery and airstrikes rather than creeping around hedges. To beat that German army of those days required real skill and ruthlessness. I am not in favour of Hitler and the German army, but they were really formidable and courageous people.
I have read a number of good and not so good books on the subject.I should have read this book first because it describes honestly, diligently and with the pen of a great Historian what really happened and how and why.If one reads this book then he/she is really informed profoundly and accurately about this magnificent story from the shores of Normandy to the frontiers of Germany. All other books may add color and interpretations but the essence is here. At times the book is dull because the relevant events are dull and exposed with the style of a military report, but the text is always true.If one is to read only one book on this saga, this is it.DVK
I would like to give 5 stars but the lack of maps held me back. Read this on a computer or in paper if you can, and have a map handy. I was confused at times when German troop designations sounded like US army designations. A good editor should have seen this. Overall I liked the book. As a Vietnam Vet, I wish we had the same leadership enjoyed by the Army troops in this segment of our history.
I was skeptical at first, thinking this book would be dry and technical. But while it is indeed technical in the amount of detail, it is nonetheless a superbly crafted recounting of the allied effort in Europe from Normandy to the West Wall. Hard to find better history than this!
This is a great story of Allied advances through France and beyond. Getting beyond the Overlord beaches was a tough fight, but then came the push towards Germany. A very detailed account of units, armies and Allies as they moved across France. A wonderful and exciting account.
After reading this account, I feel embarrassed by my reliance on Hollywood as a history teacher. Such an awful price our troops paid.
