The book on Gertrude Bell is a fascinating history of the dynamics of Europe, the decline of the Ottoman Empire, and the evolving countries in the MidEast during World War 1. The first part of the book details the upbringing of Gertrude Bell, her family and the unique education & the people & places that inspired her to explore a part of the world that was tribal and certainly a mystery to the rest of the world. She learned to speak Arabic fluently and through her travels in the MidEast and her intimate knowledge of the different tribes she was able to become an important player in the politics of the area during World War 1. Turkey was retreating into it's borders. Europe was focused on its well being. The MidEast was one vast desert populated by different tribal groups. It was through her unrelenting energy that she time and time again worked on behalf of those populations to bring peace to the region. For those interested in how the MidEast became the countries it is today it is well worth reading. It also helps one understand what is happening today in the area. Gertrude Bell was a unique character who made her mark in the world.
This is a detailed biography of a person I had not known of previously. I have been reading on various aspects of Islam and the Middle East. I saw this teased on Amazon and, after inspecting the information, ordered it. This lady traveled the sands of the Arab lands and documented in detail the the tribal makeup of the whole area. It lays out why current events are unfolding as they are. It explains why attempting to create governments promoting personal freedom and citizen participation in this region of the world is a fools errand. This is a worthy addition to the knowledge I have acquired from the volumes of the collected works of J. B. Kelly and the books by Bernard Lewis. Once again, I feel that I am in the process of gaining the equivalent of a college degree in Middle East culture, history, and religion. Even though there is much personal trivia to wade through, it was, for me, worth the effort. You will come away with knowledge of the desert from Turkey to Oman from 1896 to 1922. For those with similar interests, I recommend this book.
I was so sorry to come to the end of this book. Every page was fascinating, written and thoroughly researched by Georgina Howell who gives us a fascinating account of a remarkable life. Gertrude Bell, born of a wealthy Victorian family, educated at Oxford, spent most of her life traveling through the Middle East, in style and on horse or camelback, and becoming very involved in its development during the early twentieth century. She had a major role in the founding of Iraq and the democratic election of its first King, Faisal, and was present as the victorious Allied powers reshaped the Arab world after World War I and the collapse of the Ottoman empire. Consulted and trusted by many powerful men from Churchill to King Faisal, her knowledge of Arabic and the ways of the Arabs- and the West- made her an invaluable resource to the British and Arabs alike. What this book taught me was how little most of us know about this era in history, about the Arab world, its customs and dramas, its personalities and clashes with the Western world which continue to this day. I was profoundly moved when I read at the end of the book that the Iraq Museum for which Gertrude had spent her last days painstakingly collecting artifacts (she became an archaeologist in order to do so) was looted of some ten thousand items and closed in 2003.I can't recommend this book strongly enough. I had previously read Freya Stark's biography, "Passionate Nomad" about another brave British woman who traveled through the mideast, and I plan to read "A Prince of Our Disorder: The Life of T.E. Lawrence" (Lawrence of Arabia). This triumvirate had a profound influence on the Arab world which is well worth understanding.
This book was excellent, almost on par with Dr. John Mack's "A Prince of Our Disorder." Gertrude Bell was an amazing woman, mountaineer, desert explorer, red cross worker, spy and also having a strong hand in the creation of the state of Iraq. A contemporary of Winston Churchill and T.E. Lawrence, a fellow desert traveler, Bell was a "glass ceiling breaker" for Victorian-Edwardian women. Howell's book, like Mack's follows her entire life, not just the "Lawrence of Arabia" episode. Fluent in Arabic, French and German, her multilingual talents gave her tremendous range. Her forte was in the forming of the Iraq government. Commended by British politician A.T. Wilson at the Paris Peace Conference that "not one of the experts on Arabia, except for Miss Bell had any knowledge of Iraq." With the creation of the infamous Sykes-Picot Treaty, which divided the Mideast into British and French spheres of influence, Bell ran afoul of Sir Mark Sykes. Sykes the co-producer of the treaty who referred to her as a "man-woman," a true "Victorian" view of her. Gertrude Bell was a woman far ahead of her time, explorer, adventurer, spy and diplomat, and Howell's book brings to life the story of this amazing woman.
