Review

"My friend Karen Duffy, who lives with unimaginable pain has taught me so much; that my complaints are the most ridiculous in the world."—George Clooney"I watch to see how the girl can bear terrible pain, but like a magician, she is quicker than the eye can see. All I catch is the woman, helping other people with their terrible pain."—Bill Murray"It's highly beneficial to have a bo>ok that brings hope and humor to people. Backbone is inspiring and alive, a rare book that offers insight for the patient and the people who love them."—Ginger Spitzer, Executitive Director Foundation for Sarcoidosis Research“Writing from the heart and the funny bone, Duff shares her raw and inspiring triumph over extreme pain and illness. Her bone-deep understanding of how to transcend suffering is a must-read. Thank you, Duff, for shedding light on the pathway to empowered living.”—Dr. Beth Darnall, author of Less Pain, Fewer Pills: Avoid the Dangers of Prescription Opioids and Gain Control Over Chronic Pain and The Opioid-Free Pain Relief Kit"Backbone is beautifully written, laugh out funny, and profoundly moving. It will charm and delight, the interactive graphics are brilliant. I'm wearing the "I Got Out of Bed Today Crown" as I write this review. I cannot recommend this book more highly."—Carole Radziwill, Emmy-Award winning producer and author of the New York Times bestseller What Remains"Karen Duffy may just be the worlds finest alchemist. Her bodacious, brilliant, JOYOUS—yes JOYOUS— book about chronic pain isn't just one of the best memoirs I've ever read, it's one of the best books I've ever read in my lifetime. Full of witty wisdoms, it's an unputdownable triumph of the spirit. I just love this book!"—Marisa Acocella Marchetto, author of The New York Times bestselling graphic novel Ann Tenna and Cancer Vixen"Backbone is an owner's manual for anyone whose body is behaving badly. With grace and great humor, Duffy records her endurance of considerable and prolonged suffering only to reveal, through her example, how that can be diminished and marginalized in a life invested with gratitude and determination. I have given this book a four only because I am in a different living wage category and mean absolutely no offense because having more money can help with comfort to a certain degree. I have alot on my plate and would love to be giving more of myself to others. Meaning I must scrub the toilets and do complete grocery shopping and such. However this book is so uplifting on serious disease and chronic pain, because I can relate to Karen's experiences on almost every level. My friends have scrambled to leave me because I remind them of one of the worst things that could happen to them. Her looking inside and out determining that life is going to be fulfilling takes guts and personally pity parties get boring after awhile. I am thankful for her for her pain management. I have Rheumatoid Arthritis, Fibromyalgia, Chrohns, and find that all Rheumatologist do not give prescriptions for pain medication (any opioid). I am blessed that my primary doc allows it as her mother died from RA. I have to call in once a month, drive in to pick up the prescription, drive back home to my pharmacy and wait for it to be dispensed. Takes 1/2 of a day. I'm thankful Karen has hers delivered and can circumvent the process. See, this is the difference from alot of regular people. But she acknowledges this blessing and others in her life. So her self worked out formula of everyday life is the best I've read of. This has been a very helpful book, humor is absolutely necessary (I am a smart aleck too), reading is essential and mental outlook on the small personal things we normally let get us down. Feel like giving this to a healthy friend to read, but I don't think she has the guts to read it all. But would absolutely highly recommend this to anyone with any chronic pain and disease.

I don’t live with chronic pain, but I have people close to me who do. I never quite know what to say or do to be helpful. I always end up tiptoeing around, trying to balance between not being annoying and not appearing insensitive.I hoped this book might give me some tips and insight and it did. Ms. Duffy immediately put me at ease, because she made me laugh out loud on the first page. In this book she explains what her life is like after years of suffering, how she deals with it and what’s helpful to her from friends and family. It’s full of tips and hilarious anecdotes. It’s a charming, useful, fast read, clearly not intended to be a medical book. The author stays light-hearted throughout but that didn’t keep me from taking her very seriously. I highly recommend.

I chose to read this book as I search for ways to deal with chronic pain. Tired of apologizing and feeling the pressure from family and friends, so I hold up in my home wanting to be who I once was.( I really felt good in that skin! Happy and Dancing!) Karen D. Presents all kinds of paradigm s we can create to love ourselves by loving and giving to others in this life we've been given.

Karen Duffy manages to do the impossible by conveying the horror and scope of living with chronic pain while also managing to be funny, charming and insightful. It's an honest, conversational but well researched and deep discussion of her struggle. Managing to be helpful to those who suffer chronic pain or for those who have someone in their lives who suffer from chronic pain, while also being entertaining and thoughtful. The interactive portions of the book, the Bill Murray pain scale, coasters, masks, etc are a great touch and add to the sense of fun. A light, easy read on the surface that is really about some of the heaviest possibilities one can face in their lives.Highly recommended.

As a sufferer of chronic pain from injuries I suffered on 9/11, It's as if this book was written with me in mind. Someone out there knows that aside from bodily pain there is emotional pain, isolation and loneliness. Only a person who lives this every day can truly understand. It's helped me to be more accepting of my limitations and made me more aware of how the way I deal with my pain effects others. Whether you suffer from a chronic illness or are a spouse, partner, relative or friend. This book will open your heart and mind to allow healing no matter which side you're on.

Such a great read....thanks DUFF I certainly connected with her writing as I too dabble in the art of cramped fingers. Her life story is so similar to mine(86 the model, actress, gorgeous socialite part). When you become chronically ill, you search within more, spirituality is the extra gift we seem to receive, in trade of a healthy body. She is witty, fun and honest. Something that seems to be missing today. I have worked in the chronically ill arena for close to 25 yrs. So, I know if I give her book to others that are ill I know we have become a unspoken team of lighthearted lifesavers. Great read....duct tape comes in colors. :)

Karen Duffy has always been the most beautiful woman in the room. After she got sick, she also became the funniest. She is a very beloved person in New York, Hollywood, and beyond. I’ve always wondered what the secrets to Duff’s strength were, and now she has shared them with us all in her inspirational, deeply moving, well-researched, often hilarious book Backbone. Duff’s pages are filled with Jeopardy-worthy tidbits, like Florence Nightingales’s struggle with Crimean Fever, nestled among keeper quotes like “I think I am a very lucky unlucky person” and “I learned that failure is temporary, but giving up is forever.” Not to mention quips like, “I didn’t think eyelids could gain weight” and “My health may be going to hell, but I want to look good for the trip.” The graphics, like her cut-out “Excuse Dice” and Bill Murray’s pain chart are side-splittingly funny. Backbone is the pain-relief prescription we all need right now.
