Warren Ellis completed his masterwork with an extremely impressive finish. Usually, independent comic series end with a whimper instead of a bang, as the stories are dragged on long past the time when the author has anything left to say (this has been a problem with the Big Two, who almost never end anything and in literature in general - Mark Twain struggled for years on how to end Huck Finn, and the ending doesn't hold up to the rest of the book).I am a latecomer to the Transmetropolitan party. I read all ten volumes over 5 weeks in the spring of 2015 (while I should have been solely focusing on finishing my masters degree - it all worked out, but the story of Spider Jerusalem distracted (and entertained) me and forced me to scramble at the end of the semester). The series has aged well. Ellis uses the future to criticize the present. He is scathing and at time, spot on. There are other times that he goes way over the top, but it's all right and still not as vilely blatant as Garth Ennis (who I like very much, especially his work on The Boys and Fury).Darick Robertson drew the entire series, which contributed to the consistency and the cohesiveness. There wasn't one time that I was jarred out of the story by shoddy artwork, which I so much appreciate. Ellis made well rounded, 3-D characters (for the most part). Spider was clearly a flawed hero, and we didn't have to approve everything about him in order to like him and root for him.Without giving anything away, this volume is the culmination of the focus of the entire 2nd half of this series - Spider's attempt at exposing the President of the United States as a psycho who doesn't care about anything other than himself and keeping power (this President, the Smiler, is a wonderful skewering of the political class, but a bit too extreme...it would have been interesting to see Ellis try at least once to make him sympathetic). The series ends at the right time and the final scene for Spider Jerusalem is immensely satisfying. I read that scene a half dozen times because it was so enjoyable. This ended well. Really well. Other writers should take note.
I finished the 10 volume Transmetropolitan and believe there is more material for 50 more volumes. This is Wilder than Sandman. For social commentary This is Chris Hedges and Noam Chomsky on steroids. The art work is beyond belief. If you read the one star reviews in Amazon....some of the self-righteous people simply call it pornography. It's edgy but he rants over the right issues....and that's all I care about. It is coming out in Absolute edition if you are interested and it might be worth it. I got my 10 TP on Amazon at about half price. Let's face it the world is screwed up with people who are consumed with a lust for domination, power and privilege, in the process these psychopathic politicians, judges, corporate executives, bankers, wall street executives, neocons, police state advicates and right wing Fundamentalists make life miserable for the majority of mankind. There is nothing to stop this relentless march toward totalitarianism. So a hero like Spider comes out and kicks the shit out of these psychopaths.....if not in graphic novels where else will you see justice?Nowhere!Transmetropolitan is a cyberpunk comic bookseries written by Warren Ellis co-created and designed by Darick Robertson and published by DC Comics.  It chronicles the battles of Spider Jerusalem, infamous renegade gonzo journalist of the future, an homage to gonzo journalism founder Hunter S. Thompson. Spider Jerusalem dedicates himself to fighting the corruption and abuse of power of two successive United States presidents; he and his "filthy assistants" strive to keep their world from turning more dystopian than it already is while dealing with the struggles of fame and power, brought about due to the popularity of Spider via his articles.
While no comic is perfect and there are things that are very dated about this decade-and-a-half old comic, Ellis does capture something in the ending that feels relevant to the media landscape even 15-plus years out from its original publication. Robinson's artistic vision of the future does feel of its time in many ways: pre-internet 2.0 where the future feels more like Terry Gilliam's Brazil than our current media landscape, and yet it utterly works here. The ending of the main arc does seem to tie up many plot lines from the early issues of the work that I thought would have been dropped. The guest art at the end that fills out this volume is enjoyable as well. An excellent ending to the series.
This is a review for the series as a whole not the individual volume. I have heard about Transmetropolitan for years and a few months ago I finally started reading it. Wow, just wow. Even though the last issue came out over 10 years ago it's a story that still remains relevant today (unfortunately, read it and you'll get what I mean). All in all the characters, the main arc of the story, and the relationships are just amazing. As for the main character, make no mistake Spider Jerusalem is not a good person, but he does have principles. The Truth, no matter what. Why are you still reading this. Read the first volume, if you aren't hooked I don't know what to tell you. All I can say is I'm glad I bought all 10 and wish I had done it sooner.
What a fantastic ending! Since I'm not gonna offer any spoilers, and I've sort of reviewed a few of the others, I'll just say that not only was this a great volume, not only did the series end very well, and not only is the whole series just fantastic......I will also say that the bonus content at the end (just over 100 pages of it) is excellent. The guest comics are awesome and gorgeous and I was definitely inspired to look up the projects done by many of the artists that contributed. Always neat. This series rocks. Do yourself a favor and read book one and two to get started.
